Sig 220 v. HK USP45

If you had to choose an all-around 45 which of these two would you pick? Assume price is equal. Why?

Thanks for the input.

Glock, b/c they're the best and I own a couple. :D

I would say the H&K. Built sturdy, can take a beating, lightwieght, proven in battle and damn near indistructable. Dont get me wrong, the Sig is a very nice weapon but I would rather have the H&K.

I went to the local range and rented both of those exact guns, side by side. I shot 100 rounds through EACH.

The HK was definately more PUNCHY than the Sig. You can really feel the recoil alot more with the HK.

The Sig was much easier on the hands, and shooting it was so much more of a pleasure. From the squeeeeeeeze of the trigger, to the way the hand grips, to the way it feels when it fires was much better than the HK.

I own both, the sig is a chevrolet corvette, the H&K is a chevrolet 3/4 ton 4x4 truck. Both have thier strong points but if I go for a drive and I'm not sure where I'm going, I take the truck.

For an all around I'd choose the H&K. That being said, I think you should choose the one you are most comfortable with.

They are both fine weapons and will do the job.

I like the P220 better. It fits my hand like a glove and carries better because the slide isn't as blocky as the USP.

Having owned both I can give a fair oppinion I believe.
The sig has a great trigger and feels good in the hand and will give world class reliability and accuracy. It is not as durable as the HK however nor is it as weather proof.

The HK is also very reliable and accurate and holds more rounds. Its trigger is not near as nice as the sigs but it can be tuned to shoot well. The sig is mor econcealable. The HK is lighter. For ccw I would take the sig but if that was not a concern I would take the HK.

Now if I could carry another 45 it would be the glock 21.

I currently own an HK USP Tactical and have owned a SIG P220. For an all-around or general purpose pistol, I would favor the HK.

- The HK is rated for +P+ ammo and carries three more rounds than the SIG P220.

-Polygonal rifling, as featured in the HK barrel, is much easier to clean than conventional rifling and generally results in higher bullet velocities.

-The HK is already ugly, so no worries when draging through the woods.

-HK has a manual safety which I prefer for various reasons

As far as for reliability and accuracy, in my experience they're about even. Both are truly great pistols and many arguments can be made for the SIG over the HK. Either way you choose you win.

I shot both, I bought a HK USP .45F. The HK fit my hand better. I like the thumb safety/decocker. I like the frame rail for gadget attachment. As JJCII pointed out HK holds more rounds and can handle +P+ ammo. Although not as pretty as a SIG P220 I like the looks of the USP. Accuracy I feel is a toss up but I think HK has the edge in durability and reliability IMHO. The HK comes with a lifetime warrenty, the SIG warrenty is less then that I believe. And to confirm MK82's reasoning I do drive a Chevy 4x4.

I haven't shot a P220 yet (I own an HK .45F), but having read numerous posts regarding both weapons, I think I'd still prefer the HK over the Sig as a survival tool.

For shooting at the range, and perhaps CCW, I would probably prefer the P220.

It's funny how this comparison topic b/ these two great .45's, often come up both here and other forums, cause I was in the same exact dilemma a year ago, hehe. When I was ready to purchase my own .45 last year, I researched alot, asked around alot, and tried out .45's alot, including both the P220 and USP 45. The Glocks and others were weeded out very early in the competition for getting my investment. It came to a dead heat showdown b/ the Hk and Sig! the one thing I learned was to not trust opinions of others, esp if they don't own either of the guns. After meticulous questioning at ranges and shops, etc. It seemed to be an even favoritism to both the P220 and USP45. Then you find out that the guy who votes Hk had an Hk and perhaps only fired a Sig once, hehe. Well here is my personal opinon and not for you to take in because I said it. I found out for myself as well as many have said, that the Hk is very durable with its design and finish. I also find it a bit nicer looking than the Sig. But the Hk is a plastic polymer frame and am not too fond of plastic frames. But the Hk though plastic frame, was not too top heavy and though had more recoil than the P220, it recoiled pretty nice. The accuracy was about the same as the P220, but I found the Sig to be more accurate but not by much. Depends on distance. The farther you went, the more accurate th Sig became over the Hk. The Hk is also a bigger gun and good if you have HUMONGOUS hands. But I like the feel and comfort of the Sig much much better than the Hk. To sum it up, the better gun to me won, which is the Sig P220. I love it to this day and occasionally rent an Hk USP .45 to shoot alongside my P220 and I still feel good about my original decision of getting the P220 over the Hk. Sig is a bit more accurate with less recoil, with a more comfortable feel and hold. Sig has an aluminum alloy frame which I like over the polymer frame of the Hk. Both very reliable and neither jammed once for me or gave me problems. The Sig is simpler and easier to operate and cost a bit less than the Hk and even as you said, "if priced the same", I would still get the P220. It is just a damn good gun! The bottom line here is to go out and see it for yourself and compare the two like i did. Who knows, you may feel otherwise. Good luck.

I went through exactly the same question...

About a year and a half ago I went through exactly the same decisions. I fired the HK USP40f, HK USP45f, HK USP45c and the Sig 220 side by side alternating magazines. I have reposted certain parts of that post several times, but here is a link to the lengthy post of my shooting impressions:

H&K vs Sig - Shooting Impressions

As indicated, I purchased the HK. After buying the gun, I fired the first 200 rounds through it and wrote up a report on how that went:

HK USP45f - first 200 rounds

Finally, now I have about 2000 rounds through that HK USP. Over time I have installed a match trigger, changed out the external safety for a decocker only, purchased two 12 round "pre-ban" magazines, and added a utility light (cute little thing!) to the utility rails rails built into the gun.

The USP has served me very well. Other than a broken firing pin (flawed and it broke within the first 300 rounds dry-firing), I have had NO failures: NO failures to fire, NO failures to feed, NO failures to extract.

Would I buy this again? Definately. Do I thik the Sig is an excellent gun? Absolutely. In the end, make the decision on how you like each of them, how they fit your hand, and which you feel more comfortable with. For me that meant the more durable design of the HK and its finish along with a 12 round capacity(grey market mags), or 10 round capacity. If the Sig 220 had a ten round capacity, I MIGHT have gone that way based on how nice it shot. But the dirt/dust that I subject my pistol through during remote camping and jeeping left me feeling better about the H&K.

You will find proponents of both excellent guns on this forum; really you can do no wrong here.

as usual, YMMV, IMHO, FWIW, and all that...

I would have to agree with all of those who have chosen H&K for all of the same reasons that have listed above. I have the USP .40 compact. My little present to myself after re-enlisting for another 6 yrs in the navy in June.

the ohio state police just went thru testing for a new revolver for the troops..in 9mm and 40S@W..the sig won out...in 45acp the HK usp was tops on there list///they went with the sig in 40S@W...

I'd go for the HK as well. I think the SIG has one of the best DA pulls ever, but the HK can be carried cocked and locked, which is my preferred method. If you do not like the safety idea, leave it off or get your USP in one of the other 9 variants available, including the decock only like the SIG. Accuracy and reliability for both is a wash. Durability/ corrosion resistance goes to the HK for sure. One thing I like about the SIG is the weight. A heavier gun will recoil less, but that's not saying the HK has a monster recoil effect. Capacity goes to HK as well. I really like the HK mag release. It is easy to dump the mag with any finger on either hand, but impossible to accidently drop a full mag. When gripping the gun, your middle finger is right under it preventing it from being bumped or snagged.

My opinion is the HK USP is the best full-sized .45 on the market.

In my opinion, the P220 is a DOG, had two of them, both gone! They both shot low left from POA. Don't know much about the H&K, but my son-in-law was a seal stationed in Rota, Spain and swore by their H&K's! They hated Sig firearms because of their inability to survive special water opps and numerous breakdowns. In other words they used to call them, Rust-O-Matics! Myself, give me a well tuned 1911A1 and throw the rest in a trash can. I will never own another Sig, never, they are the most over-rated/over-priced guns on the market...

I have fired the HK, and it's a decent weapon, but I own the P220 and carry it daily. It's easily my best sidearm, and it shoots right where I point it.

As for being overpriced, well, ya get what you pay for.

Funny how everyone has a son-in-law, friend, or adopted three times removed cousin who was a Seal.

Not a bad choice to be made here. I'd go with the Sig because it feels great and shoots great. The H&K shoots great but it handles like a hockey stick for me. You can always get one now and the other later, right?
