I heard a rumor some time ago that Sig was working on a hi capacity version of the P-220. I also heard that it would be designated the P-221. Has anybody heard this?
I have hear rumors, but they don't seem to make a lot of economic/marketing sense. The .45 ACP does not sell well outside the US, and the only market for a hi-cap P220 here is law enforcement, much of which has been moving away from 9x19 and .45 for a number of years. So, I'd be surprised if they introduced a "P221," but stranger things have happened.
I doubt we'll ever see it -- since the 220 is basically a single-stack gun.
Making it hi-cap (or adding two rounds to make it a 10 rounder) would require a redesign of the grip that would be pretty extensive -- or a grip that sticks out so far as to be an impediment.
A number of police agencies and state police/highway patrols seem to be moving to the .357 SIG round which has excellent stopping power (or so I'm led to believe.) That seems a more likely and realistic area for development.
I believe there was a post on this not too long ago. A Hi-cap SIG 45 especially marketed for LE and military contracts. Someone around here had a link to the SIG home page with some info if I recall.
Frankly, I can't think of a better way to f*** up a great gun than to ruin its ergonomics by making the grip as wide as a 2x4. I mean good grief people...how many freaking bullets do you need???
