Sierra 110gr sports master HP good for defense ?

I was thinking of buying some 110gr HP for $13 p/100. I was going to reload them for potential civil emergencies. Are they decent enough to use for SD purposes or better just paying the extra $10 a 100 for 125gr XTP ?

Well I sure as heck wouldn't wanna be in its trajectory. :p But. . .

When I load for "potential civil emergencies," I go the other way: I use heavy bullets. I want to make sure a hole has been made - priority one. For 357 Mag, that'd be 158's. For 38 Special, that'd be 125's - pumped up to +P+ levels. And I use Hornady XTP's.

Loading for this purpose isn't the time to go bargain hunting. This is when you bust open the wallet and spring for the good stuff.

Not that Sierra 110's are "bad stuff," just not right for the purpose IMO. I have and load Sierra 110's. They make great varminter rounds.

Where the Sierra 110's would be real good is if you are loading a Mid speed load for a snub or +P+ loads for a 38.

At full throttle they will open up violently.. so you need to understand the trade offs involved.

Depth of penetration will be less than many feel is satisfactory (those who swear by the FBI 12" rule). The main piece may or may not make 12" depth. There will also be an issue with weight retention...it will fragment violently. Again some will feel this is not satisfactory.

However:
The shallower main wound will be quite nasty due to the violent energy dump. The fragments also create their own wound tracks and each piece has a chance of hitting something important. The standard 125 gr. Federal / Remington / Winchester ammo that has long been held as a primary standard to judge hand gun ammo performance by also shed quite a bit of weight and fragment when they go through a body.

edit to add link: Win WB 110 gr gel test just so you have something to reference for your decision making.

SHR970, the main purpose is to buy some cheap hollow points to keep for the zombies or rabid squirrel invasion. they'll be running through a 4" barrel, so they'll be motoring.
i figured $13 for a 100 wouldn't dent my pocket if they performed well. maybe get 2 boxes.
i have 2 glocks and a sig for primary 9mm, but would like my 38 well inventoried.
