Side Saddle Fit Mossy 500?

I'm considering the Tac Star side saddle for my Mossberg 500, but I've read about some trouble with the fit of this accessory on 500's with original wood slides. Anyone experience this? They make a 4-round saddle & a 6-rounder. Might the 4-rounder fit better for the guns with wood slides?

Yes, if you have the wood forearm that partially covers the receiver when fully to the rear, you will have trouble with the 6 round version.

You can do several things here:

1) Cut your forearm back (I don't recommend this, I've never seen one that looked well done).

2) Replace your forearm with one of the short wood or synthetic versions. Trouble is you'll have to replace the slide too as the shorter forearms use a longer slide. You can get the parts you need from www.havlinsales.com

3) as you've already figured out, use the 4 shot version.

Yes, that's why they made the 4 shot versions for both Remington and Mossberg guns. To fit guns with the longer, field length foreends. Another benefit is that it cuts weight.......

OK, rantingredneck was correct. That 4-rounder fit just great on my 500. Now comes the even bigger question, though...Do I mount my extra shells into the side saddle with the primer up or the primer down?

I looked at the picture on the box. They show them both ways. I checked Google images...again, both ways. This is like asking should the toilet paper be hung with the flap over or under, I guess. But, I'm supposing there are strong opinions about this here on the FL.

So, let's have some input...Which direction should a guy load his extra shells, primers up or down?

Several competing schools of thought.

1) Primer down makes for a faster reload.

2) Primer up keeps the shells from falling out under recoil or hard use.

3) 2 slugs plus 2 buckshot and use the primer position to tell the difference.

I personally (when I use sidesaddles) go with primer down as I've never had a problem with shells slipping out under recoil and I'm not planning on jumping out of any airplanes or humvees anytime soon. I also KISS by keeping buckshot in the gun and slugs on the gun as backup. I figure if I run through 5-7 rounds of 00 buckshot and the fight ain't over, I either need slugs or I'm dead and it no longer matters......
