Side Mount Vs. Top Mount...

I'm still working on that sporterized M1917, and now I have another question...

My delimma is that I have two options available for the scope mounts, a two-piece base (made by Weaver) and a side mount scope from Williams (model SM70). Unfortunately, I couldn't find any 1-piece bases. :(

What's the best option for mounting a scope on my .30-06 and why?

Clearance shouldn't be a problem for either - the cartridges eject almost completely to the right. As far as cost goes, the Weaver bases (2x#11 bases) cost about $10, the side mount costs about $65...

Get whichever mount is closest to the bore. Usually it will be the top mount, but not always. The farther the optic is from the bore the more parallax. Unless you're only going to be shooting at a set range, this could present a problem.
