How many here use side-by-side shotguns for field use?

The reason that I ask is that our local gun shop has a nice 20gauge, Savage double barrel for sale. I like the gun, in fact I think for upland game they have certain flair to them. The problem is that the few times I have tried double barrel shotguns I didn't do too well.

While I am not exactly a world class wing shot, I seem to do better with single barrel shotguns.

Is their a secret to successful use of side-by-side shotguns?
 
SxS is my favorite

I've used a SxS for upland game and waterfowl shooting for many years. The fancy one is stricktly for the trap range, and if you do your part, you can get a perfect score, much to the disdain of the guys who spent a bundle on their O/Us.

I'm not sure why, but the SxS just holds more passion for me. Yes, they work.
 
I agree, I just bought a side by side shotgun. Just a Remington Spartan, no big deal, except to me that is. Wood to metal fit is nonexistant, actually I'm glad they didn't even try to fit the reciever to the stock, it gives it an interesting look, not so sterile. I bought it on the spot because it had an exquisite tiger striped dark walnut buttstock, and every time I brought it to my shoulder I was looking straight down the rib at the bead.
 
I have a 20 SXS Fox by Savage and it's a real pointer/shooter. The double just feels natural to me and I admit that the look of a double is classic and appealing.

Tell us more about the gun.
 
By the way, some people find that right/left target visualization is hampered by the SXS barrels themselves; obviously with a single or o/u, your right/lefs sight plane if unhampered.

Perhaps that may be why you are not hitting as well as you do with other shotguns.
 
It is hard to beat a SxS for shear "class" in the field. They just have "that look". I have owned an Ithaca NID in 16 guage and loved the way it looked and felt between my hands. The only problem I had with it was I couldn't shoot it worth a darn. The gun had way too much drop for my build and I seem to have a problem at times looking down the barrels without it seeming like I am looking down the neighborhood sidewalk. There is no real reason if the gun fits you that you can't develop the ability to shoot it well. One of the best skeet shooters at our club shoots a SxS and does magic with it.
