Showing Off My Latest Aquisition

I finally paid it off and brought it home, thus closing the book on a lifelong, totally inexcusable, oversight; never having owned a S&W .44 Magnum. My new Pride & Joy is a true classic. It's a Model 29-2 with 6-1/2" barrel, born in 1972. Condition is a solid 98% for the finish (maybe even a touch better), and mechanically it's minty. I've only put 100 rounds through it, on my range behind the house the day I brought it home, in a wind-chill of -25F, but it promises to shoot as sweet as it looks.

Not bad for $280, huh? I'm.....

I can see it. Very nice, and a great price. You got a great deal, IMO. The 29's of that era are great shooters, and will give you more than a lifetime of service.

Very nice. Congrats. I wuld change out the grips ASAP. I hate those grips. They look good but don't fit in my hand very well.

Great buy! I too would suggest a grip change...a handful of stout 44 mag loads and those things will turn your hands into hamburger. Hogues monogrips are very comfortable and soak up recoil like nobodies business...ive got them on every single revolver i own(more than 10) and am happy with every pair.

Grips

Ninjato and Jeffro250: Thanks for the input on the grips. Although this is the first M29 I've owned, I've shot them plenty over the years, and I've never personally never been bothered by recoil with the factory target stocks. I have a Monogrip that I install on my .45 Blackhawk for hunting, mainly for the increased gription it provides with heavy loads. My son has a 5" 629 Classic with the Hogue Monogrip, and while I don't exactly mind shooting it, I can't say that the Hogue impresses me overly much. What I would like to find for my 29 is a set of uncheckered wood target stocks with a slimmer overall profile; my hands are a bit too compact to shoot the N-Frame well in DA with the factory stocks.

BTW, if you all think I got a great buy on the 29, you'll just love the deal I found on a 4-screw M17. It's on layaway at the moment, but when I fetch it home later this month, I'll post full details and a pic. I'm...

OutAtTheEdge, congratulations on a great gun find! That old 29 looks super. I've got a 6" 629 that I also found in similar condition at a great price...just got to be in the right place at the right time, with a little extra $$ in the pockets!

I'm with you on those S&W wooden target stocks, I love 'em! Their size and shape help make the looks of those big N frames, and I like the way they feel. My hands are fairly large and slender, and they fit me well. About 13 years ago, I bought a model 29 Classic that came with the black rubber Hogue monogrip...I hated it, I took it off and threw it out. They aren't made any longer, but I put a set of Bear Hug round to square butt conversion stocks on it, which are similar in profile to the S&W target stocks. To each his own! :D

You might check this guy out for smooth target stocks, I found his website the other night while searching for a set of wooden stocks for my Colt Anaconda. It looks like he does excellent work, and he might have something for you...

Craig Spegel is another one who might have something you'd be interested in, but he doesn't have a website...a Google search on his name will show up some places you can see some of his work.

I'll third the comments on the standard S&W grips. I like them fine for non-concealed carry. Which (usually, not always) applies to the six-inch 29's. You really have to be a horse to pack one daily, and I respect those who do.

In any case, given the price you paid for this one, you can buy a lot of grips to try out if you want, and still have a good deal.

We're all (jealously) waiting for the lowdown on the M17. :D

Those target stocks have plenty of meat on them and they are common in the $5 discount boxes at gunstores around here, I like them for range use as they spread the recoil over your hand surface area. What you could do is take a belt sander to them (off the gun of course) and adjust their width, while removing the checkering narrowing the plow handle like wide butt. With aspindle sander or a rasp you can even make your own custom finger groove grips.

Congrats on your new revolver, i have one of the old 29's on my want list also.

S&W Big Bores

Edge,

Beautiful gun, great price!

I'll toot my own horn here for a moment too. I've never owned a .44Mag though I do love the big N-Frames. I just recently purchased an unfired S&W Model 57 of 1981 vintage with presentation case. I'm partial to the .41 Magnum and it complements the hunting buddy's .44 Mag. :D

Here's a couple of pics of the M-57.
