Should immigration be a state's right?

I've seen so many states like Texas and Colorado, traditionally conservative states, be totally undermined by immigration from other states and other countries. Should states be able to control who can and cannot come to live in their state?

Should there be a time from when someone moves to a state and when they can vote there, and how long should that be?

Also, has anyone seen the HBO movie, The Second Civil War?

At the risk of getting this post locked a few minutes earlier than it would be otherwise, define "totally undermined".

I think like Colorado, where Californians and other socialists have flocked there in droves, making a traditionally conservative area quite seriously compromised politically.

Dangus,
If we actually had laws that made sense immigration would not be a problem. Constitutionally, immigration is the prerogotive of the Federal government. I know of quite a few illegal aliens. I have yet to meet one that would fit my definition of a criminal. They come here and work their butts off at jobs nobody here would take. They have strong families, and still take their kids to the parks. I see hispanics in general to be the guardians of a society we have discarded. On any given Saturday, go to one of our local parks, and you will see them with all their extended families BBQing and having a good time. They aren't without fault, but they hold certain things sacred, and still seem to have a sense of honor that seems to be lost on the rest of the country. I oppose them swimming accross for welfare benefits, but I favor them comming here and working to make a better life for themselves and their posterity. That is why my ancestors came here in the mid eighteen hundreds. Germany sucked (famine & Feudal system), and Texas was giving out free land to any takers. They made a better life here, and so it would be hippicritical for me to deny the same thing to another. I just think we need to get a grip on the 'welfare minded' immigrants. Maybe pass a law that says you may not draw welfare benefits in the first generation to arrive. You may not bring your family into this country unless you can support them. That would go a long way towards fixing our problem.

Agree with most of KJM, except the old falacy of doing jobs nobody else will. My white ass has done the jobs no white man will do. Also immigration in the past was in waves and there was time for the immigrants to assimilate into the country to become americans and the was without the hyphenation that is so overtly present today. As to california it has probably lead in immigration, so they aint all from here going to other states, how did they get here? Mostly from the other states and mexico. I would personally halt all immigration in this country for a while until we can stabilize things a little and let the people all become american-Americans.

White european christians created this counrty from the start and that seems to upset many non europeans, so they try to harp on all the evils of the forefathers and the oppressive history of the whites while metioning none of the non-european cultures that were just as brutal.

I certainly think the Libertarian's open immigration policy is a recipe for disaster, and I'd fight it with every bone in my body.

People come into this country, that's fine, but we have to draw SOME lines. Totally open immigration would mean that all the world's countries, instead of fixing their own horrible problems, would simply continually dump their poor, oppressed people, upon the shores of this nation, until at last we become just as crappy and over-populated as their homeland, at which point their homeland stops using us as a trashbasket and starts to fill up itself. It's a recipe for universal disaster. If people are in crappy situations, then we must fix those situations if we can, though certainly not like we tried in Somalia, but we must not let our country fill to the brim because we're the only country that has a supposedly protected bill of rights which gaurantees some basic fundemental liberties which all people everywhere should have if they haven't given a good reason why they shouldn't.

We want immigrants, they make us strong, they compete with us, and add diversity to our horizons, but as a wise man said, "Anything in excess is too much".

Intersting thought. How do you think it would be handled? My thought is that sooner or later there would be someone at each State line saying "Papers Please".

Dangus, interesting observation. I take it from your comment that you are not necessarily talking about immigration from other countries but from other states. We have the same flood of Kaliforians here that you see. Maybe we need a state law saying only NRA/RKBA/GAO members can move in?? I kinda like that one.

Some of you people need to realize that immigration in this day and age should be obsolete. It has been proven throughout history that with more population comes more laws and more oppression (we have to keep the masses safe). Why do you think it's so hard to find a place to shoot nowadays? Do you think it's because every local, county, and state government is "anti-gun"? I don't think so. It's because of over population. There are too many people here right now and we need to start to put an end to it! Why do you think land costs so much? It's because over population has driven up prices!

Back in the days when we had all those immigrants coming from Europe (ie..early 1900's) there was still quite a bit of area. As a result of those folks coming over here it made an even stronger country with a better defense. Now I think we are soon going to approach a "breaking point". The immigration issue is the one thing I disagree on with the Libertarians. They want to borders to be wide open to just further reduce quality of life for the citizens already living here. I will still vote libertarian when the opportunity presents itself, though (not this year!). I will do this because I believe in RKBA and smaller government above and beyond anything else.

Thanks for listening to my rant.
