Should I trade this rifle?

Need some opinions on this. I've got a box-stock Ruger M77MkII Stainless in .308 that I'm thinking of selling/trading. Why? It was the first deer rifle I purchased for myself, but I have several to choose from now, and I just can't seem to coax MOA accuracy out of it like I have with other rifles. I've shot quite a variety of ammo through it, even a box of Federal 168gr. match, but the so-so trigger and lackluster accuracy have been bothering me. Anyway, I'm thinking of trading it in on a heavy barrel in .308,leaning towards the Savage 10FP or maybe a 12 (the varmint model w/ 26" barrel). Should I trade it or will I be sorry?

I spent $75 for a Timney trigger for my Mk II and it made a world of difference.

Sometimes, some tweaking with the bedding of the forearm will tighten groups a whole bunch. Do a search here and in "Smithy" on "wax paper".

Most folks like the accuracy of the Savage, but there are many not-so-nice comments about their triggers; there's another current post here in this forum on that...

Although my Savage model 12FV is a .223 (26" barrel), I love it. The trigger is adjustable and unless you're a MUCH more demanding shooter than most folks, I think you'd find it works great. I wouldn't presume to suggest the Savage over another gun, but I can certainly vouch for the Savage. It shoots great, less expensive, and I wouldn't trade it for anything else. I'm happy as a pig in mud. :)

I would keep it for sentimental reasons. You might have kids one day and passing on your first rifle is a good thing. So it isn't the most accurate rifle in the world, as long as you can get minute of deer, it's enough.

I think I said it on "the other post" too, but Timney offers a trigger for the Savage as well, and from what I hear, it's a dandy! 2 - 5 pound adjustable, $85 installed.
