Should I trade Colt Pony for J frame?

I was in the gun shop recently and the owner (who I am good friends with) has a customer looking for a Colt Pony Pocketlite. He is willing to trade me square a NIB J frame. I can pick the model. I always had my eye on a either Cenntenial or a Bodyguard. What do you guys think? Should I trade since I don't use the Pony much (lousy trigger and only a .380)? What J frame should I get to keep my 6" 686 company and, eventually, my SA 1911. All the J Smiths he has in stock are pre sellout due to manufacturers date. I am really tempted since there is no money involved and a used for a new trade. Thanks in advance for the replies.

My 686 sleeps with my 36, they are both pampered members of my family. I keep hopin they will get amorous and make me an I frame.

Sam...only bad thing bout wheelguns is I don't have enough of em

If you can't use the gun, then the trade would be in order. A J-frame in good shape ought to be worth something similar. If the trigger is your only concern, though, you might want to trade for a Govt.380/Mustang and retain your ammo stock, holsters.

I once had a government model .380, and I couldn't get a magazine of rounds through it without failures to feed, even with hardball. If you could get it to shoot, it was accurate, though. I got rid of mine.

The J-frame revolvers are utterly reliable, and surprisingly accurate for their barrel length. I personally would not hesitate to make such a trade, especially since you don't seem too happy with the pony.

Just my 2cents worth.

Trade it. I was in the same position a couple of months ago. Traded mine for a Kahr P9 - way better gun. The Pony had the trigger from hell....

You can't go wrong with a nice J frame snubby. I prefer the 38 special model 442 and 642 centennial models. They have the capability to shoot +P ammo and weigh under a pound loaded. I have a Barami hip grip and Tyler-T grip adapter on mine and carry it tucked inside my waistband behind my right hip. It is so light and comfortable that I often forget that it is there. In fact, I sometimes have to feel it with my hand to make sure It's still on me.

I prefer the centennial model to the bodyguard model. There is no need to cock a self defense revolver. Plus the totally concealed hammer of the centennial model allows the gun to be carried in and fired from inside a coat pocket with no worries of the hammer snagging or a coin or crud falling down inside the hammer slot.

This is just my opinion on the J frame snubbies. As to whether or not to trade, I personally prefer the five rounds of ultra reliability to the finiky little semi-autos. This is just my preference however.

Good luck.

Greetings,

I have two Colt Gov. .380's, which are great, and a model 649 (bodyguard), which is great. If I could only have one of these guns, it would be the 649, by a mile.

Good luck,

Ledbetter

I had a colt pony and I can attest to the destable unbearable stinking trigger. I got ride of mine. As for the Mustang its a good pistol but not for pocket carry. I don't much like the idea or a cocked and locked auto in a pocket holster. If you go condition 3 its noticably slower into action when compared to a J frame. On this one go with the revolver.

I intend to go into harms way.

If you are thinking of carry, go with one of the hammerless (concealed hammer) models. I nearly learned the hard way that hammers do catch on coat linings.

I'd trade for a Smith $ Wesson vintage model
60, in .38 Special anyday; if I were you.

Sounds like a win-win to me! :) And it may be time to develop some wheelgun fetishes. ;) Serioulsy, if you want back to a .380, there are some fine pieces out there; and the snubbie will ALWAYS be tradable. :)

Keep the Pony - buy a J frame.
The Pony is a very cool little gun that has a lot of potential. Keep it or give it to a guy who would really owe you one for it. A J frame? Ive seen several for sale for under 2 hundred. One was 135 and worn - but not worn out.
The Pony could get a Mac's PCP job on it and make it a real carry weapon.
