Should I fix this?

Today I was looking at my Mosin and I noticed the paint on these little metal bits on the upper hand guard.

(Please disregard my hairy leg)

Is there a way to repaint these like the original way? I've seen the brass/ gold coloured ones that look kinda cool, is there a way to make them like that? What paint should I use? I have some Black Model Paint (Accrylic I think). And finally, should I? Would this be like bubba'ing? Thanks for you opinions.

Hi Marauder,
For the time being I'd simply wipe down that area of the rifle when cleaning to prevent rust. It does show some character.
Meantime, look for a spare hand guard that you like, which could be swapped out for looks later on.
Best,
Rob

Now that I think about it. It does show signs of the previous owner (God rest his soul) . As well as the bolt, even though I've polished it a bit with some soft sandpaper just to keep the signs of the previous owner and only did the contact points to make the bolt smoother. Thanks for your help.

You know, I don't know how old you might be.
I can understand how a young person could be eager to take something old and make it "look better".
To me, some of this older cruddy looking stuff just adds "character".
And might be better if left as-is.
However, each person has preferences of their own.
In my case, I took what I thought was a crummy Marlin finish, scraped it down, stained and oiled it to make it look what I thought was "better".
So you decide in your minds eye what you want to see.
Something newer looking with an even bright shine and solid color.
Or something that's been around the block and had some sort of knocked around a hard life.
Exception: now if that blotchy chipped appearance was the result of a third party painting, I'd be inclined to remove it all rendering it back towards original.
I just don't happen to know that gun so I don't know what an original might look like.

I like to think of myself as a person with a mind different from my fellow youth (I'm 14). Yes, I have decided to keep the rifle as is, though I did polish the bolt a bit.

It's not a particularly collectible rifle, nor is it a show piece, so if you want to fix it up, why not?

Bottom line: it's your gun, make it look the way you want.

Disclaimer: This is coming from a guy who has cut in half pieces of 3/4in pipe insulation duct taped to the cheek comb on his target rifles. (2 half pieces get my eye right at the scope and give a nice comfy cheek weld) I care a lot more about how a rifle shoots than how it looks. If it shoots well and is comfortable to hold, that's enough.
