Should I customize this?

I have a silverchromed Belgian BHP with adj silverchrome sites and original wood grips with "B" medallions the pistol is 99% Ser# 245PY4048* circa. 1980

My question is this, Is this a rare gun? I didn't think so but I was told by a guy a the range that the gun would lose considerable value if I had it customized (reliability package, better sites and an improved thumb safety lever)

I got the gun from a widow who said her husband purchased the gun new and kept it in the drawer. The condition of the gun leads me to believe this was the case.

Am I missing something or is this just a nice base gun to make improvements on?

Hello. Yes, it would lose value as it was altered, even if the alterations made it better! You can almost never get the cost of modifications back if/when you trade the gun unless it's to an individual determined to have the gun with those changes. Having said that, if I wanted the gun and intended to keep it, I'd have it customized to my tastes.

Best.

Why did you buy it? Are you a Browning collector? Are you planning on selling it in the future? If you answered yes to either of the last two questions then you should probably leave the pistol as it is since that would get you the greater return on your investment down the road. If you just want to shoot it at the range then the gun is pretty good as is, even those butt ugly sights work okay on a range gun. If you are thinking extensive modifications you might think about turning the one you have for a quick profit and pick up a used BHP in bad need of a refinish, like the Israeli guns that came in recently for $275-$295. The mods will cost about the same. Cutting the slide for sights and having the frame checkered or stippled with require a refinish anyway so why put the on a $650 base gun when a $300 base gun will look the same when the work is done?
