Should I buy?

I found an 870 express today that I could probably get for $100.00. It appeared to have a spattering of surface rust on the receiver, barrel, tube, and possibly in the chamber (but I could wipe the chamber clean with just a finger, so maybe it was just dust). The stocks are synthetic and the barrel is about 26inches with remchoke. It looks like the rust would all come off with just some oil and a cloth.

I don't need a long barreled shotgun, but I'm thinking I could cut it or put a 18" aftermarket on it. I might even krylon the exposed metal a flat green or something. Could I really go wrong for $100.00????? Surely I could get $100 back out of it no matter what I do. Your thoughts?

Doesn't sound like a bad deal, but if you buy a new short barrel, it will most likely run you at least $100, so your $100 dollar gun will be a $200+ gun...with some rust.

Not sure how much you could get if you tried to sell the 26" barrel, or how much demand there would be for one.

As for cutting the long barrel down, I don't really know how perfect the cut has to be (maybe it doesn't matter), but I myself would be hesitant to just cut off a barrel because I don't really have the tools or know-how to do a good job. On a rifle, even a slight slant to the cut would throw off accuracy. Not sure if it could throw off the pattern of a shotgun.

You can make a great, straight cut line with a tubing cutter...

But, I would cringe if I were to cut off a barrel with threaded choke system.

You may not have a use for the 26 (very likely a 28) inch barrel today but in the future you may wish you never chopped it.
