Should I buy and FAL?

is the STG-58 that AIM surplus selling a good FAL. I have always thought that I would like to get a FAL. I wasn't planning on thinking too much about it for a few years. But I am worried that prices are going to start climbing pretty quicly. Also does it matter a lot what mags you buy. I have heard that FAL mags are pretty flimsey overall. I would get and ar10 but that is way to expensive and the mags are pretty rare. Are FALs really all that great. I have a colt ar15 and I love it. are FALs solidly constructed. Thanks, Larz

FALs are twice as solid as ARs. They're also twice as easy to clean, seeing as the dirty parts are pretty easy to access.

The only FAL receivers you should consider are manufactured by DSA or Imbel. If you order a complete rifle, make sure it's built on one of these. If your rifle is built on one of these receivers and it's not a perfect assembly job, it's worth it to have it reworked by a good FAL smith. With other receivers, like Hesse, there's a fair chance that the receiver is at fault, not the assembly job.

I got one from AIM (Century STG-58 on Imbel receiver) last December. I like it a lot. Mike looks nice, but I've seen others that weren't quite as nice (I think I was lucky). You might also consider buying a receiver, and STG-58 parts kit, some U.S. parts, and having one built for you. This might not cost much more, and you could get the barrel lenght and muzzle break configuration you want. But I'm happy with the rifle I got from AIM.

My FAL is a solid and accurate gun. But the one thing I don't like about it is that it is overly heavy and isn't well balanced. My M1A and AR10 feel much better when shouldered.
