Should I buy a Sig 229 .40?

OK, I have read a bunch about the .40 vs 9mm debate, the reasons why and why not to buy Glocks, H&Ks and Sigs, and arrived at the conclusion that the Sig 229 is probably the best for the money, reliable, accurate and strong.

I know that the 9mm has its pluses- available everywhere, cheap, accurate.
The .40 S&W is not as widely available, not as accurate, not as cheap, but is harder hitting.

And a local shop has the Sig 229 .40 two-tone for $549, while the best I have seen for a 9mm is $665.

What would you do?

For $399, you can buy a police trade-in Glock 22, compact frame, with two hi-cap magazines from TargetMaster in Penn.

Sigs are great guns - had a Sig P220 and P226 but their finishes just don't hold up well.

I think those are stainless steel finishes on the two tones. But hard chroming is the best. The Sigs except for the P239 and the P245 shoot sweet.

I highly recommend the 229 in .40. I have a 226 .40 and it's awesome ...very accurate, easy to handle, and 100% reliable. The 226 is a full size weapon. The 229 is slightly smaller and better for carry or smaller hands. You get what you pay for with Sigs. Shoot it or one like it before you buy, if possible. Good luck! TCW

Sounds like a good buy to me; if you want a
Sig P229! :) With that said, I would opt for
1) Sig P220A in .45ACP, 2) Sig P228 in 9m/m,
and last but certainly not least 3) Sig P226
in 9m/m. As a matter of fact, I almost would
rather have the P226 in .40S&W, than the P229
in the same caliber!!! :p Then buy you a Bar-Sto .357 Sig barrel. :D

Buy the SIG. The 229 has a stainless frame. The Nitron finish they have on the black pistols is a lot better than the older finishes jtduncan mentioned. Shootability is a matter of opinion. The 239 and 245 are nice shooting pistols for a lot of people. The 229 is an excellent pistol. If it fits you, you can't go wrong.

That is a fantastic deal! Is that NIB? If it is, then its a phenomenal deal.

The two tone finishes are excellent and definitely hold up. I love my 229 two tone.
By getting a Sig 229 in .40, you can get a factory .357sig barrel and a barsto 9mm barrel. And effectively have 3 guns in one.
What would I do? Get it!! Now right now! :D

I called the dealer that had that 2 tone 229.

Let's just say that the special is over, ended 10/11, and now they are $749. No amount of begging would change their minds.

Yes, this was NIB, it was Trader Sports in San Leandro, CA.

I am going to wait a little and try the gun show at the Cow Palace next weekend for a deal. Cross my fingers, look on gunbroker.com, maybe something will come up.

If you're comparing the 229 in 9mm and the 229 in .40, I'd say to go with the .40. With hi-cap mags, you're only giving up 1 round in capacity for the bigger round (229 .40 holds 12+1 rounds, while the 9mm version holds 13+1).With 10 rounders, you're not giving up any capacity. I'll usually take the 9mm if I can get a few extra rounds, but not for 1 or 2.

Regarding Sigs in general. The Pros are that they are well made and have excellent triggers. They're also pretty accurate and shoot real nice. I particularly like the feel of the rough finished standard grips, though I could do without the hump towards the top near the decocker.

The cons are the finish; mine has a few bright silver chips where it used to be blued. Also, some don't like not having a safety. Finally, if you plan on carrying, there are smaller, lighter guns with a larger capacity.

Should you have one in your collection? I do (blued 229 in .40), and I'm glad I do. However, if I could only have one or two, it wouldn't be in my first choices.

NIB two-tone P229 for $550, and you didn't buy it? What were you thinking?

I'm gonna have to disagree with jt above when the accuracy of the P239 is questioned.

I had one for three years, and it shot EXACTLY where I pointed it, EVERY time.

Had a guy come down two lanes one day to see what I was shooting. He had a Gold Cup, and I was absolutely lapping him with that little 9mm. He was depressed when he saw how small the gun was!

Sorry you missed out on what was obviously a sweet, sweet deal. Could have saved $200. Man! Why can't I ever get something like that thrown in front of me?!?

Oh man! That seriously sucks...just a note if you see a NIB gun (especially a Sig) selling for 200 bucks cheaper than typical prices, do not hesitate and buy it!

Be sure to also look at the classifieds here at TFL. I got an awesome deal on my P229 two tone here on TFL.
