Should a new holster be tight..tight?

Haven had much expereince with leather holsters..mainly military holsters.

Purchased a Galco Mdl CON440H for a Springfield XD-40 4". The first time I put it in it was tough..even tougher getting it out. I have let it sit awhile in the holster and seems to be getting a little bit better...Is there some customary ritual for breaking in a leather holster..this one doesnt have a thumbsnap....so I can understand it being a tad tight for retention purposes and not loose.

I have e-mailed Galco about it....

so any sage advice......

ive used a couple of sheets of paper wrapped around the gun and then inserted into the holster for a few hours or so. the thickness of the paper has been just enough to make the gun fit/draw alot smoother.

Instead of paper use Saran Wrap. One layer at a time until the gun fits the holster as you want. The one thin layer will allow you some control over just how much you will stretch the leather.

Oh Snap! Saran Wrap.... good thinking

The paper worked fine tho...still needs to be loosened a little for a smooth draw....

Galco did e-mail me back and recoomended this also

Thank you for your purchase. CON440H is the correct product code for the Springfield XD 4” barrel, so please just verify that these are the numbers on the back of the holster. If the numbers match up, it sounds like you just need to break in your holster. Our holsters (especially the Havana ones) are normally quite tight when new, and yours is a common question. To break in the holster, begin by working the leather with your hands, bending and flexing the holster in all directions. Don’t fold it in half or anything, but don’t be afraid to flex it. This will warm and stretch the fibers of the leather.

After flexing the holster body for about ten minutes. Take the unloaded pistol and jam it into the holster as far as you can possibly make it go. Take it out and jam it in again. Do this about 20-30 times. This should relax the holster enough to accommodate your pistol.

If you have any further difficulties, please don’t hesitate to contact us again.

Thumbs up for Galco Customer Service :D

My galco matrix holster was also very tight when i first got it. then the rep sent me some ez draw lube and now it works like a charm :p

Actually, wax paper works better than the saran wrap to loosen the fit. I do this with the holsters I made. The wax paper doesn't grab and stick to the inside of the leather, unlike saran wrap.
