Shottie Troubles: Rem 870

Well guys, I bought an 870 from a guy. It's pretty much "tact'ed" out with a railed fore grip, the Knoxx recoil reducing system stock, and tube extension.

My problem is that when racking the slide, the fore arm tends to "jam" in the retracted position and its very difficult to push it forward to chamber a round. Eventually I can get it to break free and move forward.

I haven't yet pulled it apart as the tube extension is either rusted or loc-tited to the tube and I will probably have to use some heated "persuasion" to get it off. I have cleaned and lubed as well as possible without breaking it down and it's better but still jams.

What are the likely causes?

Thanks,

Is there a sidesaddle installed on the receiver? If so, loosen the screws.

No, side saddle. I'beginning to wonder is the slide is "over travelling" when I rack it. Like there might need to be a spacer on the tube to stop the slide before it travels too far.

Thanks for the reply.

I would just take it apart, clean it really good, then see if that fixes it. Plenty of youtube videos to show you how if you dont know.

Post Breakdown Report:

I got it completely apart and gave it a good cleaning and lube. It's definitely better. Nothing bent, no unusual wear marks. Still sticks a bit if the slide is retracted hard. Part of the issue is the tactical forearm on it. Difficult to get a good grip on the rails. Now it feels more like its new and just needs to be worked and broken in.

I'll fool with it a bit more to see if I can smooth it out a bit.

Thanks for all the guidance and suggestions.

rduckwor,
Check to see if that forearm is rubbing or catching somewhere?
I have a Wingmaster that's about 35 years old and you can slam the slide either open or close, as hard as you want and it don't matter, action runs smooth as silk!
Check the forearm for clearance!;)

That reminds me of one time I had trouble with sticking too on my 870. It was the forend. It wasn't completely centered on the rail and when I racked the slide back the corner of it was hitting the receiver. It was a hogue forend and was rubber so it was sticky. I just rotated the forend to make sure the rear part wasn't contacting the receiver when I pulled the action back and it was perfect. Check that, otherwise ?

is it relatively new? or has it seen better days?

A friend of mine has a really old Sears shotgun that does that, but that cause it looks like it been through Nam..
