Shotguns in Florida

I own a 12ga. shotgun and I'm wondering if anyone knows how to legally transport it to and from the range. Also, I've heard it can be in my truck if I am going to or from a recreational activity (such as clay shooting), and that there is supposed to be some sort of 3 steps needed to fire the gun while transporting. Please shed some light for me. Thanks in advance

Nope, there is no 3 step rule. Handguns must be encased in an "enclosed" container (glove box, pistol rug, snapped holster, etc).

For your shotgun, just get yourself a cloth type case (to protect the gun) and off you go. I usually use the back seat of the truck for mine, but that is only because I don't want it sliding around on me and getting into the steering wheel.

The crazy thing in Texas is if I have a handgun in the car it must be concealed. If I have a legal shotgun in the car it doesnt have to be concealed.

Here in NJ the rule is this--transport of any firearm requires that it is unloaded, the ammunition is in a separate container from the gun, and neither is accessible to the passenger compartment. If there is no trunk, like a hatchback vehicle, then the gun must be in a locked container, such as a gun case. If you follow those rules, then surely you'll be compliant with laws of your state.

5) POSSESSION IN PRIVATE CONVEYANCE.--Notwithstanding subsection (2), it is lawful and is not a violation of s. 790.01 for a person 18 years of age or older to possess a concealed firearm or other weapon for self-defense or other lawful purpose within the interior of a private conveyance, without a license, if the firearm or other weapon is securely encased or is otherwise not readily accessible for immediate use. Nothing herein contained prohibits the carrying of a legal firearm other than a handgun anywhere in a private conveyance when such firearm is being carried for a lawful use. Nothing herein contained shall be construed to authorize the carrying of a concealed firearm or other weapon on the person. This subsection shall be liberally construed in favor of the lawful use, ownership, and possession of firearms and other weapons, including lawful self-defense as provided in s. 776.012.

Shotty or rifle is okay anywhere in the vehicle as long as your intended use is lawful.
