Shotguns barrels and steel shot

Ok, help me here. Does steel shot destroy older shotgun barrels? I have some '60s and '70s Browning Auto 5's that I want to duck hunt with.

As far as I know, the older shotguns aren't supposed to use steel. The newer guns can generally shoot both. I'm not sure why but, that's what I seem to remember hearing.... Whit

Those Brownings were made of fine steel, and QC was excellent. Choke makes a difference here, I'd hesitate to shoot steel in ANY shotgun choked tighter than Modified, or with a Polychoke. And, I'd be very tempted to have the forcing cone lengthened, for GPs. Steel just doesn't compress going through funnels, and that what the cone, and choke, are.

A conditional yes....

Well my Auto 5s aren't choked. You change out the barrels. MAD Calls has a choke out now specifically for steel shot. I just didn't know if I could shoot steel out of those barrels

Ben, back in the Dark Ages barrels were choked. Tubes aren't the only way to choke a bbl, the bore can be tapered to do that also.
Look on the bbls near the breech end. They should be marked Full, Mod or Imp Cyl.

DO NOT SHOOT STEEL SHOT IN AN OLD BROWNING AND DON'T ASK WHY JUST DON'T DO IT!

Blow off a month of College weekend binge drunking take the money and go to Walmart and get yourself a Remington 870 pump.

I have an 870, but why go through that punishment of the kick of 3 1/2" #2 when I can just use a semiauto? BTW, I just found out that Auto 5 owners and put Invector barrels on the Auto 5 and can use that to shoot steel shot.
