Remington barrels are MUCH more easily available than Winchester barrels, and now that the Winchester has been discontinued this will be even more so.

Remington is the top pump shotgun, and they sell "Combo" gun sets, which is a gun with a spare barrel, usually a rifled or smooth deer barrel.

Remington sells these combo sets through any gun dealer, and at Wal-Mart.

Here's a link to Remington's web site showing most of their guns. You can also either order a new Remington catalog or download one to see.

Here's Wal-Mart's listing for available Remington 870 shotguns:

Winchester is out of biz in the pump market. That leaves the Wingmaster. You can shoot shot, buck, and slug out of the same barrel. Chokes make a barrel more versatile with shot. You don't want much choke with buck or slugs. Rifled barrels make sabot slugs accurate out past their effective range. So start with a smooth bore hunting barrel and get another or so as you get more proficient.

Yes..... But.

There are two things to take into effect: the barrel and the gun itself.

If you have a 3 1/2" Super Magnum gun, you can use almost any Wingmaster barrel.

If you install a 3" chambered barrel you can shoot any 3" or SHORTER shell. You CANNOT shoot 3 1/2" shells.

If you install a 3 1/2" Super Magnum barrel you can shoot any 3 1/2" or shorter shell.

Things are different if you have a standard 3" chambered Wingmaster gun.
In that case, no matter WHAT barrel you install, you can only shoot 3" or shorter shells.

Excuse me. ....AND MOSSBERG---last I knew you could get a "combo" with a bird and slug barrel for $300 or a bit more.

Well,, there is also the Ithaca guns available too,, just a little more pricey than the Wingmaster,, but posibly a better gun. Not to mention Brownings

Good thread.

I have a 1967 wingmaster 870 rem. Has a full 30" full choke barrel.

Can I shoot slugs out of it without damaging it?

I notice they make rifled barrels for the "EXPRESS" line of remington 870's, but do they make a rifled barrel for the wingmaster with the polished and blued surface?

ok i made the decision to get a wingmaster super magnum now the only question i have is can i shot rifled slugs out of a fully rifled barrel not just sabbot slugs and what type of shot should be used in the vent rib barrel?

Rifled slugs will lead up a fully rifled barrel fast and take lots of work to get out. Best to stick with sabots for that.

Datchew, your Full choke will shoot slugs without harm but accuracy's iffy.

They do make a 20" RS barrel for the WM. Haven't seen a new one recently.

Anybody have experience with plastic fouling from slug sabots? How often do I need to use a plastic solvent, if ever? Same question would apply to muzzleloaders I guess.

Thanks

Thanks much Dave McC.

I had been looking on ebay and gunsamerica and found none.
I haven't looked at remington's website for years cause it was bad before.
It's much different now and i actually was able to find exactly what you're talking about. Shoulda searched all the options first.

Appreciate the help. I'll try the rifled slugs from the smooth barrel first.
might be plenty for my use.
