Shotgun Scope Questions

There are obvious reasons that shotgun scopes are "shotgun scopes". But I was wondering if I felt that the eye relief was enough for me to handle, would it be ok for me to mount a regular rifle scope on my shotgun? Is the recoil really so great that it will mess up the scope? Does anyone have experience with this?
Another question is, how much eye relief is enough? All comments are welcome.

Thanks for the replies, SquirrelMan

I don't see why you couldn't mount a regular rifle scope on a shotgun. There are some pretty nasty recoiling rifles out there. If you look at the recoil tables, a 12 guage shotgun has about the same recoil as a .375 H&H magnum.I have a Tasco PDP-3 Red Dot sight on my Rem870 Police Magnum and have had no problems with it. Most gun shops in areas that have slug hunting for deer have a bucket someplace full of cheapo scopes that were formerly mounted on shotguns. Good scopes hold up, cheap ones do not.

One buddy has a Bushnell mounted on an 870 that's held up to maybe 100 rounds without a prob. Another guy I knew got maybe 6 rounds out of his.

If I were doing this, I'd go for a low power fixed Leopold. They handle anything...

My slug gun currently has a 2.5x Leupold compact on top. It has about 5" of eye relief and that's more than enough. I wouldn't however want to go below 3.5" of eye relief.

Shotgun scopes aren't necessarily better built but have a different parallax adjustment to account for the shorter ranges. My scope isn't set for the shorter range and I don't notice an accuracy difference. Slug guns aren't precision shooters and if the scope is suitable for rifle work, I think it will be fine for shotguns.
