Never shot a shotgun in my life, is there something that would be a good starting point or does it matter?.....that was fairly straightforward lol

Ok here some facts .

#1 never judge a shotgun gauge by the color of its hull.
#2 never shoot steel shot in a choke tighter than mod. or a old gun
#3 try not to put a 3.5" magnum in a standard gun or shoot 3" out of a older 12 ga
#4 Heavier guns have less recoil ...But are tiresome to hold and aim+ carry.

bunch of stuff let me think lol

If you are buying one, try to get one that feels good and you think fits you well. Google shotgun fit. also do some research, get a quality gun. If you read about the same gun having the same issue from multiple people, i would find another gun. Don't buy something because its on sale, buy it because you know its the one for you.

if you are just going out with some buddies then just go have fun and don't fret, its a ton of fun. I can't shoot mine enough, which is due almost entirely due to the fact that ammo although isn't exceedingly expensive, isn't cheap either.

for a while my favorite type of shooting was long range rifle shooting, but once i started shooting clays i found that to be much more entertaining. i still like rifle shooting, but shotgun shooting is very fun as well.

Do you have a 12ga or shotgun ?.

steel shot is loaded faster than lead because its lighter and needs more velocity to get the energy it needs to be strong .

Hevi shot patterns really good for turkey hunting but is expensive 30$ for 10 rds .

00 buckshot in a 3" shell has a range of 20 yards with a cylinder bore choke maybe 30 or more with a mod choke or light full.

Bigger pellets = less pellets but have more energy per pellet

Steel shot does not deform so it doesn't do as much damage when in enters flesh like lead ,,, But i seen people kill coyotes with steel shot must be alright lol.

more to say lol...

cool, thanks for the info..

also, no I don't own a shotgun nor have I shot one.. as the title says, I'm a newb to shotguns.

get a maverick 88 @ walmart for 170$ Most guns have a shell guide that grabs my thumb but the maverick doesnt. also if you like that pumping noise a shotguns make get a mossberg is has the loudest pumping noise lol

lol, well I imagine I would like the pumping sound lol

Is the Maverick 88 a pump shotgun as well?

(edit)

that may have been a stupid question since I'm guessing the Maverick 88 is made by Mossberg

yeah pretty good to. may be cheap but its the smoothest Ive run a crossed .
.I probably want get a new shotgun for a year got a 2 high end rifles i want :p.
what you looking to spend ? And what style you want like something hi-tech or space age or looks like a 1980's shotgun from them old action movies ?

Price range has no limit, though I should say that I wouldn't want a high-end one seeing as how I'm new to shotguns.

Just whichever is a good starting point. I'd prefer a classic look.

Before any suggestions of a firearm, you kinda need to figure out what you want to do with it. Hunt, trap, skeet, maybe home defense. Each of these will lead to a different firearm. A used 870 or 1100 are not bad guns to start with. Browning makes the BPS and then there is the Mosberg line of shotguns. Kind of need to have an idea of budget restraints. If I were starting out again would just break the bank and buy a Perazzi and get it over with.

hypothetical situation ."you walk into a store and by the wrong shells 3.5" and you only have a 3" gun when you fire then the gun explodes /.very unlikely that you would buy the wrong ammo. also soon as you see a 3.5" you will grin trust me lol
