Shotgun Mod Questions

I bought an 18.5" Maverick 88 12ga shotgun recently, and I was thinking of making a couple of modifications.

I was thinking of getting a pistol grip only stock (yeah, I know, alot of people say they are worthless, but I want one.) The only thing I wasn't sure about is the legalities of putting a pistol grip only stock on this already very short shotgun. Does anybody know the laws regarding this?

Second of all, if I do get the pistol grip, I want to get one of those SMG loop slings to go with it. The kind that just attach to the butt of the bun and loop around your shoulder. I figure that will help make it a bit more controllable. The only problem is I have not been able to find one.

Anybody have a line on where a fella can pick up one of these and which one is the best for the price?

EDIT: Just remembered that they where selling a Mossberg Persuader right next to the shotgun I bought. They where both the same length, but the Mossberg came with a pistol grip. I am going to assume that if mossberg ships it out with the gun, its legal.... Can't believe I didn't remember that...
 
The Federal, (and most states) law on shotguns are:

The barrel must be at least 18" long.

The gun must be at least 26" long, total from muzzle to butt.
 
Bob, I have an 870 that I equipped with a StockShox and a forend pistol grip. This gives me the best of both worlds...I have a stock that is LOP adjustable and, with the two pistol grips, I can shoot at waist level. It's a HD weapon so my maximum range concerns are 25'. I practice both shoulder and waist level.

Call me crazy (or maybe just inexperienced) but I kinda want just the pistol grip.

On of the reasons is that it will be riding around in the car with me, behind the seats of my truck. And the shorter it is, the easier of a time I am going to have of getting it out and ready, if need be.

I have a Maverick that I set up with a pistol grip just to play with. With my light loads it's alot of fun, with 00 buck it's BRUTAL. OAL of mine is just a hair over 28 inches and I can't think of why yours would be any different.

Now for the sub-gun slings. Does anybody know the kind I'm talking about?

The just attach to the rear of the gun and they loop around your right (if your a righty) shoulder.

I think the idea is to adjust them to the length of pull you like and then use them as a kind of reverse stock by pulling them away from your body.

Can anybody give me any recommendations for a good one of these?

Something we have noticed about the Big Three pumps (Remington 870, Mossberg 500, Winchester 1300) is that the receivers are scaled in such a way that if your barrel is 18", the OAL will be greater than 26" no matter what kind of stock you put on it.

The Maverick is the same as the Mossberg 500.
 
StockShox same line of products as Comstock

AZ,

I am also considering some of the fine products from Knoxx, is the StockShox the same brand of products from Knoxx Comstock?

Also does it really reduce recoil by 60%?

Would you recommend their other products?
