Shotgun legality in CA

What is legal on a shotgun in California? Are pistol grips and/or collapsible stocks legal? Minimun length is 18", correct? Also, what is the maximum magazine capacity? Californis laws are stupidly difficult to understand :barf:

Pretty std on what's legit.

24" (25"?) minimum, no pistol grip, 18" min barrel length, 3 rounds max capacity, must cost at least 18 bazillion bucks w/o engraving or gold inlays or FFl transfer fees and will be a free gift to the first person who answered your post. :D

Don't forget the mandatory state approved gun lock which costs 5 times what an unapproved one does. Because just any old gun lock won't work even if it's identical to the official kind.

Yes, to an extent. Shotguns with pistol grips are legal, but there is a minimum length that shotguns can be. If you have a collapsable stock then it has to meet minimum length requirements while collapsed. According to the CA Firearms Laws handbook "short shotguns" are illegal.

CFL Handbook pg.6

"A short-barreled shotgun means a firearm designed or redesigned to fire a fixed shotgun shell that has a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length or an overall length of less than 26 inches; any weapon made from a shotgun which meets the barrel length or overall length criteria; any device which may be restored to fire a fixed shotgun shell and which meets the barrel length or overall length criteria; or any part or combination of parts designed and intended to convert a device into a short-barreled shotgun or which would permit an individual to readily assemble a short-barreled shotgun. (Penal Code § 12020(c)(1).)"

Also, what is the maximum magazine capacity?

From what I understand it IS legal to unplug a shotgun so it can carry more than 3 rounds. However, shotguns must be plugged to be used for hunting. I have never seen any shotguns with magazines.

I did a little more research from the link that Scope gave me and found out the following:

Shotguns in CA:

A. Must have a 18" or longer barrel
B. Must be at least 26" in overall length
C. Can have a folding/collapsible stock OR a pistol grip, but not both
D. CANNOT have: a detachable magazine, a revolving cylinder, or be a Franchi SPAS 12, LAW 12, Striker 12, or Streetsweeper

Couldn't find anything on ammo capacity regarding shotguns, though.

The Saiga (12ga, 20ga, and .410ga) is the only external magazine loaded shotgun that I'm aware of, but it is out there.

I'm not sure if they can be purchased in California, or not. The Saiga shotgun is not on the AWB list, but the Saiga rifle is, and they use virtually identical actions.

I think that the prohibition on both a folding/collapsible stock and a pistol grip on the same shotgun only applies to semiautomatic shotguns, not pumps (or if you have a weird sense of humor, not to O/U's)

Easy Way To Determine

First look at the shotgun or even rifle in question. Then ask yourself if that is a gun that Arnold might be seen with in one of his movies. If you answered yes, odds are that the gun is illegal in California.

If the gun looks like something that Davey Crocket might have carried, then your looking at a gun that should be legal in California.

If you have a pump, you can have both a pistol grip and a folding/collapsible. I have the knox setup on 870 and I checked prior to doing this with my local sheriff down here is So Cal. Also turner's has some of the remmy 870 tactical on sell off the shelf.
