Shotgun coyote

What is the best shotgun setup for getting coyotes?
I dont want slugs and dont care about the pelt of the torso area. I just want the longest possible range.

Without slugs, I think you'll be pretty much limited to about 25-35 yards. 50 max. Past that accuracy and energy drop off quickly.

10ga with BB's or 2's good out to about 60-65 yards. 12 gauge with the similar set up about the same in my experience.

I lived in Arizona many years and have shot coyotes with just about every gun and pistol I have. A shotgun, unless you are calling them in close is somewhat a poor choice compared to most any rifle. I had pretty good luck with #4buckshot in my shotgun. Each pellet is about .24 caliber and going at roughly 1200 to 1300 fps it is like firing 27- 22 long rifles at them.Coyotes are not hard to kill by any means, but even with my load of #4 buck it was marginal. I would much prefer slugs and know they are going down

I'd prefer a rifle too, but that would be dangerous on my property (as I'm generally shooting towards an expressway about 1/4 mile away. I keep some S&B 15 pellet 00 buck, 3" magnum around. I've patterned them to 75 yards, and would get a coupla hits or more at that distance (.32 caliber and a decent velocity), plenty for coyote.

You may want to consider one of the O/U combo rifle/shotguns. I have one that is great for coyote hunting. Baikal Izh94 12guage/7.62x39. You can get them in different calibers from .223 to 30-06, .410-12guage 3". Mine has 2 triggers rather than a selector switch top barrel is 12guage bottom is 7.62. They come with 3 different choke tubes for the 24"barrel. The gun is great for quick follow up shots. You can still get them for around $400. Since you are concerened about range with this set up you dont need to be since youve got a rifle for long range and a shot gun for close.

I've shot many, many coyotes with a shotgun. They hate 3 inch mags with # 4 buckshot. I started out with a browning auto and now use a mossberg pump. I always know that if they came in 50 yards or closer that it will be all over. I've never had one get away if they come in that close. Even out a little further is not a stretch. #4 buck= sudden death !

No rifle because i am in a firarms restriction area. and no slugs cause i want a gun to shoot shot for small game, a lot of slugs out of a iproved cylider choke gun, i have heard damages the gun too much (but i am starting to recosider slugs)

Blacktail, somebody is blowing smoke up your pants. I have never heard of a rifles slug harming any shotgun choked from nothing to full. They are MADE to be shot in any gun, it is just that sometimes the best accuracy comes with little or no choke,, sometimes

Yeah, slugs will not harm an IC-choked barrel, so use a slug. But barring that, triple ot, or maybe double ot buck would be your best bet. But keep your ranges under 45-50 yards, in order to be ethical about it.
