shotgun cleaning/maintenance kit recommendations?

Hi all,

Now that I've purchased my first shotgun (870P), I need to learn how to clean/maintain it, as well as get the proper tools for the job. Does anyone have any recommendations for what kind of products and tools I should have on hand for this? Any good all-in-one kits available on the market? Thanks.

Those bore snakes really work great. Along with a good cleaner like Hoppes or something. As for the action, I like a spray cleaner, like gun scrubber, or brake cleaner works great too, and is cheaper. If you have an air compressor, that works awesome too. Then oil what needs oiling, and go get her dirty again! :D
 
boresnakes are nice but i'd definitely get the old rod setup too, i generally use the boresnakes to knock out the big stuff and give it the "once over," then a traditional cleaning kit for the detail work. you can go to any megamart with a sporting goods section and find generic or shotgun cleaning kits. if you have/will get a rifled slug barrel, make sure you get a brush that can get into the rifling, otherwise any of the more interesting brushes designed for smoothbore will work fine. knockout's bore snake is nice and inexpensive comparatively. any kit will work for the rod-and-brush setup. plain old toothbrush will do the trick scrubbing out everything besides the barrel. hoppes, outers, and the gun manufacturers themselves are all popular solvents and oils.
 
An 870????

You can clean it with sand and gravel and it'll still work just fine.

Seriously, though. I use Rem bore cleaner and Rem Oil.

Shotguns for the most part are pretty low maintanence. Especially the 870

Cleaning Shotgun

I use Hoppes 9 Powder solvent to clean the bore. I use Shooters choice degreaser to clean and remove grease from all actions. I use EEZOX as my lubricant. I also agree with all the folks who recommend the bore snake it works well. Make sure you get yourself a good cleaning kit. I have 2, one especially for my shotgun and another for all my other weapons.
