i just got an 870 may 4th it came with 2 barrels one rifled one smooth bore with interchangable chokes it only came with one choke so my father got me the express upgrade kit. im embarassed to say i dont know that much about chokes, and was wandering what kind of shots i can put thru each choke i have

remington mod
remington imp. cyl.
remington full lead and steel (ive heard that you can only put lead thru a full is this true?)

oh and one more question my father has the Model 870? Express Synthetic 18" 7 shot the one with the fixed Cylinder choke, can he put lead shot thru it? (we just got 100rd. of federal 7 1/2 lead shot)

p.s. I LOVE MY SHOTGUN:D

You can fire ANY standard shot, slugs, or buckshot through any STANDARD choke from Open Cylinder to Full.

Where you get into questions is shooting through a more than Full specialty choke.
These extra-Full chokes are seldom encountered and are intended for use in specialty shooting most people don't do.

Most newer guns are OK for use with steel shot, but older guns are NOT.
Since your gun is new, it's good to go with steel shot.

What choke you use depends entirely on the size of shot you have, and what you're shooting AT.
Shooting at high flying geese requires a fuller choke.
Shooting at quail in dense cover requires a more open choke.

You can shoot just about anything through your Synthetic Express 18" since it has either an Open Cylinder or Improved Cylinder choke.

Of the chokes you have the Improved Cylinder is a more open (lesser) choke that's ideal for shooting buckshot and standard slugs.
It would also be good for use on quail and other game taken at very close range.

The Improved choke is a good "general purpose" sort of in between choke.

The Full is the tightest standard choke, and is for use for targets farther away.

Don't forget to take some time to pattern your gun with all of the chokes. Sometimes the way the chokes are marked closely resembles the way they pattern, and sometimes it doesn't.
