Shotgun barrel length measurement

Is the barrel length measured from the front edge of the receiver to the end of the muzzle, or is it measured with the barrel removed.
My new used 870 measures exactly 25" from receiver to muzzle, with another 1.5" or so of length which sets back in. I'm guessing this would be considered a 25" barrel.?

troy is correct.
It is also my experience that Remington's measurement of their barrels is just an approximate measurement. Most of the measurements they list in the catalog are about 1/2" different from what I actually measure. In most cases 1/2" shorter than advertised, but in some cases 1/2" longer.

I suspect they make all of the barrels at least 30" and then cut at the vent rib post to get the shorter 26" and 28" barrels. I have found the 26" and 28" barrels to all measure about 1/2" short. I once had an 870 Supermag with an advertised 23" barrel that was 1/2" longer.

guitar1580, for clarity: the measurement is taken from the face of the bolt (or breech of an O/U - SxS)) to the end of the muzzle. Troy's method is correct as are jmr's observations.

If a shotgun barrel must be measured for length, apart/separate from any/it's receiver, measure from inside the muzzle, along the length of the barrel & chamber to the rear end of the chamber's rim recess in the edge of the chamber's throat.

And if you are trying to determine length to abbreviate a longer barrel for HD use, it is best to err on the side of too much longevity rather than too much brevity......

I used a cleaning rod, and measured from muzzle to bolt, and its 25.5 inches, so I guess it's considered a 25" barrel. Thx,
