There are three factory loads currently "available." I say available because nobody ever has it...
American Eagle is Federal's generic brand. It's a 100gr JSP that travels about 1,400 fps from the Ruger SP-101 3-inch. These are the only target or practice/range loads available from any factory. They come in a typical 50-rd box of ammo.
The Federal Hydra-Shok reduced recoil 85-grain load is the "light" defense load. It's obviously reduced in powder and you can feel it and the numbers back it up. It sends that 85gr bullet out of the SP-101 under 1,400 fps. Less velocity AND less bullet weight than even the range/target load. As such, this one is the easiest to find on shelves. Costs twice as much as the American Eagle and the power is watered down. There is a place for this load, but it still annoys me!
YES, I can see the purpose for it, but I think some of the folks with the newest .327 revolvers out there are buying and carrying Hydra-Shok and likely don't realize that they are taking the "weak" route. If you find that recoil and extreme flash/concussion is too much, try the wimpier Hydra-Shok and you might like them. They are in small 20-rd boxes.
The big daddy is the Speer Gold Dot load. Here you have the heaviest bullet, cutting edge bullet technology, and moving at a velocity that gives this load the most energy of the three by a large margin. It sends a 115gr slug out of the Ruger revolver at more than 1,350 fps. It's the warmest load to get the most on-target energy of the three. Also in small 20-rd boxes.
Speer, like Federal, is an ATK brand. So it's not like more than one company is making this ammo. It's all Federal, and they also haven't made component brass available and they aren't even allowing Starline to make any of it. It's a pretty idiotic marketing move by Federal/ATK. Anything that chokes off the end-user's ability to get or make ammo for a new cartridge is simply stupid, IMO.
