Shot the Dragoon Today

I had limited time at the range today but did put two cylinder's full of lead balls down range from my new Uberti 1847 Whitneyville Hartford Dragoon. I used 50 grains of Pyrodex P. It shot high like all of them do but the groups were reasonable for the first time. The loading lever did drop three times which I guess is why Colt changed the design in the First Dragoon.

Roshi-- I shoot a Uberti Colt Walker. Only occasionally will the loading arm drop. I use a six inch piece of thin leather wrapped around the barrel to deal with the issue. Works and sort of looks cool and in character with a BP revolver. FWIW.

Made of brass

Congrats!
I love my Dragoons too.

I use a little black electricians tape and you don't hardly even notice it.

Darn it Doc, now you got me going through 4 months of range brass to find cases to cut up and solder, looks great and with patina it'll fit like it's original.:D

Ok, Doc's is much nicer than my electricians tape :(

Doc, what calibers did you use to make that? I'm going to have to make a couple for myself. ;)

When a weak spring on a 51 or 60 Colt lets the rammer drop due to recoil you can remove the latch and spring then drop a couple of BBs or birdshot down the hole, then replace spring and latch. The added tension usually does the job.

The material originally came from

A brass hydraulic cylinder off of a junk handicap van.

Never throw anything metal away.

When I get one of these I was just going to stitch the ends of a strip of leather together to make a little leather belt. Should slip over the sight and snugly keep the lever against the barrel.

I've tried leather thongs on mine with limited success.
The problem I had was that while unholstering in a match on the clock, sometimes the leather would get pulled off and the lever would drop upon firing. No time to dig the thong out of the holster and put it back on.

Once the thong even blocked the gun going all the way back into the holster and that took time to clear as well.

However, for casual shooting, it should just fine, I keep the thongs with the guns and still use them in non competition shooting.
