Shot shell in revolvers

Got a Ruger Gp100 with 4inch barrel and a Sp101 with 3.5 inch barrel which one is the best to use "shot shell", also is shot shell good for Squirrel, rats, snakes? At what range?
Thanks...........

CCI makes fine shot shells for a 38/357 revolver... but the difference between a 3.5 and 4 inch barrel is not enough to worry about.
But, that little shot (about a #12) is not going to do much on a squirrel beyond more than a couple of feet and not much better than that on a rat.
It is called snake shot for a reason, and even then 5 or 6 foot is a good maximum distance for that caliber and size of shot.

I guess a good pellet rifle or a 22LR is going to have to put on the list.... to reduce the local backyard population of squirrels ;)
And I wouldn't want to get within 5 or 6 feet of a rattler, my luck I would miss!

anyone got any recommendations for a good pellet rifle?

You need to shoot patterns from both your guns. Some do better than others with shot cartridges. I have an S&W 686 with a 4" barrel that I can break skeet from station #8 with about 2 out of 3 shots. I also have a 3" model 66 that does not hold nearly as good a pattern.

I have killed chipmunks on the run with shot cartridges from a .22 magnum. That was at a range of around 8'. I am sure that you could dispatch a squirrel if you had one that close. The .38 Specials will shred a snake at 6'. I have done in a couple, and the CCI cartridges work almost as well as a hoe :)

You might see if you can pick up a Marlin 25MG Garden Gun. It was a bolt-action, box magazine fed, smoothbore chambered for the .22 magnum shotshells. It does not currently appear on their web catalog, but you could get them for under $200 new, so used in good condition should be pretty cheap.
