Okay I just got back from shooting my GP100 357 mag! It is amazing! I love this gun for sure! I was almost converted all the way to revolver with my lasty purchase of a S&W 642 but this Ruger is a joy to shoot. I had never shot a 357 (only 38 special+p) and was worried about kick. Let me tell you the ONLY thing that kept me from shooting all day is lack of money for more rounds. I LOVE MAGNUM ROUNDS! This gun handles them with ease and makes it comfy for me. Anyway yeah I love it. :)

Try .38's!

Yeah, .357's are just comfy to shoot in a GP100, but .38's are a dream! I recently tried my hand at fast double-taps with 130gr. FMJ .38's and was very pleased at how easy and accurate it was to shoot. Welcome to the club!:)

Rugers are great. The GP-100 might seem a bit heavy to some folks, but the beefy frame soaks up .357 recoil.

the GP100 weighs LESS

than the 686. It also shoots pretty darn well, and costs $400.
Nice, huh?
I have two of them. My 686 sits in the safe.

I currently own a GP 100 and can't say anything negative about it. Shooting at the range brings a smile to my face that lasts the whole day.

I'd expect no less from a GP100!

But ya gotta get a few others now so you can really know the difference and make an educated opinion...

(Another revolver afficianado is born)

COngrats on a great purchase! I got My GP-100 in November and have put 1200 rounds through it, %25 magnums. I love it!! Like you said, If I could afford it I'd shoot all magnums. Though I need to sand the sharp upper corner of the trigger since with heavy mags it recoils against my finger and can draw blood after a box or so. My skills have improved IMMENSELY since getting it. If you can shoot well with a revolver in both SA and DA, then you can shoot well with any auto that comes your way.

I used to have a 686 and I frequently shot CCI Blazer .357 JHPs. My Gander Mountain has them for about 12 bucks a box. They don't have them in .38 so the cheapest .38 I could get was still about 8-9 dollars. Because of that I shot the .357s almost exclusively. They functioned flawlessy, and that'd be a great price for any .357, let alone a JHP. They're aluminum(?) case which is why they're so cheap, and I wouldn't necessarily recommend defending yourself with them, but they were by far the cheapest .357 loads anywhere in town. I've had some problems with Blazer in autos if the feed ramp wasn't clean, but in the revolver you don't have that problem.

Man, I do wish I had a better ammo selection here. When I get back to the mainland a couple of times a year I always bring back on my flight the maximum allowed 11 lbs of ammo. That's only 7 boxes of .357 :(

Total Agreement

Yes, I have found that shooting my GP is better then just about anything else I can do that won't get me arrested.

I have one , like it a bunch. I suggest you look for a pack of different colored front sites - VERY easy to change and really makes a difference in various light conditions.

I took my GP100 out on a hunting trip a couple weeks ago. I bought some hot 180 grainer hunting rounds. A buddy was admiring the gun and asked to shoot it. We found some time as we were packing up to go home. I loaded some plinking 38's alternating with the hot .357s. He didn't even notice the difference!! I did, but it was not uncomfortable at all - snappy would be the best description. It's a hoot to shoot, but I want some hotter ammo (or a 44mag.) I hate heavy rifle recoil, but I bearly notice handgun recoil...at least in the GP100.

1. Shoot a .357 magnum revolver.
2. Start handloading.
3. Shoot big bore.
That's the only way to make it work.
If you try to shoot big bore before handloading, you'll go broke in a matter of weeks.
