Shot my High power rifle Weatherby Vanguard .270 first time last night

Last night I went out to the outdoor range which is really set up for handgun (NRA 300, 2700 bullseye) and I shot my weatherby at 50 yards to zero the scope, Bushnell trophy 3x9 mounted on leupold dovetail rings and a two piece mount, I used winchester hunting ammo and I shot it offhand, kneeling, and leaning against a post(simulated tree). I fired 40 rounds of winchester power point .270 150grain, these are full power hunting rounds. I fired without a rest or bench because I wanted to approximate the way you would hunt with the rifle.

it took me 10 rounds to figure out where it was hitting on the target 10 rounds to zero it, and the next 20 rounds helped me establish a good flinch!!!!!

This morning I have a nice pruple bruise on my right shoulder and a brush burn!!!

Full power .270 has a substantial kick!!

The ammo I was using says its good for brown bear, and moose!!

The vanguard performed flawlessly, I was able to keep 20 rounds in the 2.25" bull of a 50yrd small bore rifle target.
kneeling I produced a 5 shot .75" group which was my best.

This is a very nice rifle, great for the money.

Is there some way to avoid the shoulder pounding while shooting off hand? I was wondering if maybe my technique is at fault(Idont really have one). Or is .270 pretty much a high recoil round? This is my first high power bolt action rifle. Unfortunately I may not be able to shoot it on our outdoor range, and I may have to join another gun club which is not geared only towards bullseye pistol (one with a long range outdoor range).

All of the other shooters compalined about the noise even though I was on the m-16 range which is somewhat enclosed.
Our club rents the outdoor range from the national guard armory, and it is only open to our club May-June tuesday and thursday nights 5:30-dusk.

Does anyone here relaod for .270, how do relaods with a 15gr bullet compare with the Winchester hunting ammo, velocity and recoil wise? How about the noise, is .270 out of a 22" tube that loud?

Thanks

.270 recoil

I remember when my brother had me shoot his .270 when I was 10...yeah it hurt! lol The reason why it hurt is because I didn't hold the rifle correctly at all. The .270 is normally considered a low/medium recoiling round. I know why it hurts: "I don't really have one" <--a technique and also "This is my first high power bolt action rifle" Try to remember to keep the stock of the rifle in your shoulder's pocket and not on your shoulder. Keep a good grip on the rifle, not a deathgrip but tight, the gun might be beating ya up because you're holding it too limp. Keep your cheek welded good to the stock. And keep shooting it! Don't be afraid of it because you will understand how to control the recoil in no time. My dad bought me my first high power bolt action when I was 12, it was a Remington BDL in .270. It beat me up at first until I learned proper positioning of the rifle.
