Shot Grouper Ported Chokes

Has anyone used the chokes they have in Cabelas and Brownells that looks like a recoil compensator? You know the ones that stick out about an inch from the muzzle with ports all around it? My buddy has gotten into these "turkey" or "card" shoots and want to try them. Are they worth the $50 or are they just as good as a typical ful choke? Gun is a 870 with a 26" barrel. Thx

I've shot ported chokes, and can't tell a bit of difference between them and the unported ones.

I'd go to a patterning board and find out what his current "full" choke shoots, and then decide if he wants to tighten up from there. I personally like Briley and Seminole chokes, both of which can be made to your shotgun's specific bore diameter.

As near as I can tell the sole advantage to extended ported chokes to shooters is they provide a good place to hook in the can opener on your Swiss Army tool for loosening or tightening.

The advantage they provide to the makers is they sell big time, providing jobs and stimulating the economy.

I doubt I could tell the difference in kick between ported and unported chokes. By the time the main gas pulse hits the holes, the shotgun is already recoiling.

As for your bud's 870, a longer forcing cone is called for BEFORE buying any more choke tubes. A longer cone(within limits) MIMICS a tighter choke, but it's just denser because there's fewer flyers. More pellets stay in the pattern.

If I were setting up a card gun, the cone is where I'd start tweaking.
