Very cool. Not something I get to do often at all as I am a not a collector. Shot an old family friends 1888 made .44-40 Winchester 1873. Very cool old gun with that classic old sound when it went bang. Fairly accurate too for an old gun. Didn't really test it, but was able to stay within 4 inches of bulls eye at 100 yards with those old sights! It was his dads gun that he killed his first Deer with at 17 years old in 1943! Good stuff.

Tell your friend to be careful what ammo he shoots. That rifle was made for low pressure black powder, not modern high pressure smokeless powder loads.
The older Winchester receivers were actually made of iron, not steel and the action may not stand up to modern ammo.

We actually were shooting some old smokeless Rem .44-40 through it and it was cracking the cases so we quit. Thanks for the tip, I will pass that along. I do know that it has been shot only a handful of times he has had it. She is destined to the gunsmith for a tune up too as the action was a little touchy. Thanks.
