Shot a .300 WSM This Weekend

My son bought a new Browning .300 WSM with a Burris 4-16 scope. (He works in a gun store and that's a different story)

He sent it with me to the farm where we have a range so I could site it in for him. He had bore sited it, but you know how accurate that is. After I figured out the the first shot was 8 inches high and 10 inches to the right, I shot 5 more rounds and had it at 2.5 inches high at 100 yds.

This gun would be perfect in .243, since it weighs under 7 lbs. The only thing that saves it is the 24 oz. scope to add weight. Six rounds was about all I wanted to fire through it yesterday. I may fine tune it at 200 yds later.

Nice gun to carry, though. And it hits where you aim, now.

I have been known to wear a down jacket in summertime, when sighting in a thumper. :) Or, interpose a small sandbag between the butt and my shoulder. Another option is to bring my left arm all the way around the stock to hold the butt--spreading the load considerably.

I'm considerably short on Masochistic tendencies...

L-Ray: I'd be interested in hearing what kind of groups you are getting with the 300 WSM.
Good Shooting, CoyDog

Man-0-man, Have you seen all the wildcats that have sprung from this cartridge already. From the .22 to .35 and probably more. In the meantime I'll stick with my 270s, 06s , 308 and regular 300 win mag.
Looks like a promising one though.

FYI Regarding recoil. I got a piece of toolbox liner, kinda looks and feels like burlap dipped in a soft rubber. Cut a six inch wide strip, folded it into a little 4 or 6 layer pad and shot 40 rounds of .300 Win Mag w/ no problem. Could have shot 40 more if I had it.

CoyDog, It hits where you aim. The last 3 shots were 1/4 inch to the right of the vertical line on the target. I was still trying to get it 2 inches high at 100 yds.

I probably won't shoot it again unless we try it this weekend at one of the local ranges. I still need to get it sighted in better. I want it dead center and 2 inches high at 100 yds. Right now it is 1/4 inch right and 2.5 inches high.

This is the Browning Stalker with the 23" barrel and I think it will group 1/4 to 1/2 inch on a rest. With me holding it free hand, I wouldn't bet on anything smaller than 10" :-)

Mcshot,

I know what you mean. I saw some at Lazzeronies web page in that range. This could make some really interesting small cal. rounds.

Think of the ballistics of a 6mm based on it.

Rumor has it that Winchester will be coming out with a 7mm based on it in the next couple of years.
