Shorty AK buy or not?

A good friend wants me to buy his 1 year old Bushmaster (He has a chance to buy a pre-ban Colt). He has put around 1,000 rnds. through it. He wants $670. I know it is in good condition but the trigger feels like it came out of a $30 pellet gun, and would have to be upgraded. If I pass on this one, what would be a good way to build my own?

Just an opinion from a Kalashnikov fan, relatively ignorant of the AR ways...

Personally, I don't see very much need for the AK brake on an AR. Recoil and muzzle rise is not an issue with the .223. The brake increases the noise and may have a cool factor look if you are into it. Personally, I think the extra 1.5" of barrel (or so) could be better used to milk a little more velocity out of the .223 if you are going for a shorty Bushy.

#2... for a little more cash, you could get a NIB Bushmaster that will truly be "yours" from the getgo. Not sure if the used one will be covered by warranty, but the NIB one will. Might luck out with a decent trigger to boot.

Again, I could be way off base as ARs are not (yet?) my thing. Just an opinion that you should NOT go for this deal.

BigTim,

For $670 you ought to be able to buy a new Bushmaster and a couple of GI magazines. Local shows have them for sale for as little as $625.

There are very informative pages on building your own AR at AR15.com (not the forums--they're down).

I own a shorty AK and love it. I dont think that someone looking for a 16" AR is gonna cry over 1.5" of brake. Otherwise they would be looking for a 20". I can tell you that muzzle jump is non existent. As far as the noise goes, people standing beside you will notice the diff but you wont. I only bought this model because the standard 16" AR's were not available in my area. I have fired over 2000 rounds without any problems. Mine cost $629 NIB

Tim: I'd highly recommend the 16" Shorty Carbine (No Comp). Besides the 1.5" of rifled barrel you'd not get with the AK, you also will be able to easily do barrel/sight work, if you don't have that fake commie brake welded on. You just might want to install a free-float tube, for example.

Just to back up the other posters, Bushmaster AR15 carbines can be found NIB for $699 down here in Florida...
