Shorter Barrel For Mossberg 500???

I am very new to to shotguns. Just recently acquired a Mossberg 500C 20 Gauge. It came two barrels, both 26", one rifled for slugs. I'm no hunter but figured it would be sufficient for home defense. I have shot it and was really pleased with the operation. The 26" barrel seems a little long for a home defense shotgun but I had no luck finding a shorter replacement in 20 gauge. Anyone know if there are any aftermarket barrels out there? Didn't see anything on Mossberg site. I appreciate your help. Thanks.

After reading your post, I did a bit of searching and came up with nil in terms of resellers. However, after perusing the Mossberg website, I did see a few 500 "special purpose" guns with 18.5" (20 gauge) barrels in various form. Given this, I am assuming that such an HD barrel can be had for your gun.

At this point I would suggest calling Mossberg, tell them what you have and what you need, then go from there.

BTW- You are correct in assuming that the current 26" barrel is too long for practical HD use. Generally speaking, most "HD" barrels are of the 18.5" to 20" range and are usually "true" smoothbores or IC at best.

Try Mossberg. If no luck buy an unribbed barrel and have gunsmith cut it back and crown it. Use buckshot and it will do the job. Keep your field barrels. I have five Mossberg shotguns and the one 20 gauge is always my field gun for small game. I started with a 20 gauge 54 years ago for pheasant and rabbits and I find myself now going back to the 20 gauge for all small game. I always lose it to guests when my city kin come to visit and hunt up here on the "Ridge" , it is invariably their choice.

I had the same issue so i emailed Mossberg. 2 weeks later i got this response.

Thank you for your email. Yes, we do have this barrel available. Part #90015 18.5" cylinder bore barrel, blue finish, Price $81.58 plus the shipping and handling $8.95. You can order thru us at 1-800-363-3555.

This should take care of it for ya.

RobertSB701-

Forget this e-mail stuff....just call them. Why wait a week or more for a response (if you receive one at all) and/or leave it all up to guesswork when you could have your questions answered within minutes?

Speaking from experience, I suggest calling Mossberg roughly 30 minutes after they open or 30 minutes prior to "closing time" so your call will be answered more quickly.

You might want to look at barrels for the Youth model. There is a 22" vent rib with interchangeable chokes offered in this model, and should be available from Mossberg as a replacement part.
Also look at Numrich arms (e-gunparts.com) for a used barrel.

Edit: just looked at Numrich and they had an 18 1/2" plain bead sight barrel listed pretty reasonable.

It's cool to look for a shorter barrel, but if all you have in the meantime is that 26", don't ask the bad guy to come back when you get a shorter barrel! It'll stop him just as hard. :D 00 buckshot is still 00 buckshot.

True enough...just watch that barrel around tight areas and keep your distance from the BG or he/she just may end up with a newly acquired shotgun.

When you get a box of 00 buck for the 20 would you be so kind as to post a pic? I can get #3 in walmart and #2 by mail but no 00 buck for the 20 gauge...:D

Success!!!!

I called Mossberg today and yes indeed they fo have a 20Gauge 18.5" barrel w/ bead sights!!! $66, told them to wrap it up I'll take it! I told the rep. I had no luck finding this barrel on their site and he told me not all there parts are listed on their website. I just shook my head and let it go....you wouldn't want to list all the barrels...heck you might go and sell em'. I left the part number at work, I will post it tomorrow. I appreciate all the input.

One of my mossbergs is the 500c, i just took my plumbing pipe cutter, spun it around a few times at 18.75", filed the edge and i was good

8 or 9... not a big loss... :D Now if they would stock them locally.
Thanks for pointing it out, i am gonna go to my local shop and pull this thread up on their puter and see if they will get them at a decent price for me! I will then do a penetration test to compare them to me #3 I already use.

Mossberg 500 short barrel with rifle sights?

While on the subject of short barrel availability for Mossberg 500, do they have a 18.5" or 20" barrel with rifle sights? I have searched for one and cannot find one, is one available or out of production. I would like one of these barrels for my own 500, something on the order that Remington has on their 870 police/riot guns. I personally think that barrel would work great close in hunting in brush or SD/HD.

Yes I believe they do have that. The military and police are switching away from the venerable ol' bead as it seems they find it easier to teach guys who already have the familiarity with sights.
Just call them up as "Roberts" did and they will help you. I think you may only find it in 12 gauge tho...
Be sure to specify smoothbore or it will likely be the rifled slugger barrel they quote.
