Shortened Super Redhawk

I am looking into picking up a big bore revolver and almost settled on the .44 Redhawk, that was until I saw an example of someones shortened Super Redhawk. Personally I think it looks freaking cool and am not sure why Ruger doesn't offer this configuration. I am going to do a little digging to see if any places specialize in this but if anyone can recommend some competent smiths who could do this I would appreciate it.

Ive never seen those models but I really like the look of the one in the picture I posted, not sure if it is working. I need to figure out how much it will cost to get the barrel chopped down, re-crowned and the sights re-mounted to see if it is worth it, otherwise I will probably end up with a 4.2" standard Redhawk.

Only problem is if you look on the bottom it says it's not MA approved/certified. For a handgun to be sold in MA in needs to be submitted for approval before it can be sold here. While all the standard Super Redhawks are approved, anytime a TALO or new model comes out it needs to be resubmitted because it has a different model number (I know makes absolutely no sense). Even Sig's when they release say a 938 with just a different paint scheme and grips are considered a totally different gun. That's what happens when the people who make the laws here know absolutely nothing about guns.

I own an Alaskan in 454 Casull, & love that gun... also plan on getting one in 480 Ruger as well...

but I'll admit the one the OP pictured seems to have the best looks ( IMO ) of any I've seen cut down... the slab side doesn't do anything for me...

when it comes time to buy the 480... if I can't get an Alaskan, I'll have to save the image of that cut down Super Redhawk... & have my loacal builder buddy do a little modifying :)

BTW... I wonder if it actually would be easier to remove the barrel, cut it to the length you wanted, thread & put in a forcing cone & reinstall, rather than remove the front sight, cut off, crown, & reinstall front sight ???

Maybe I am incorrect, but that looks like an easy job one could do themselves. If the vent rib stops right there, you don't need to worry about adding a front sight. Just cut it and put in the lathe for the crown and add the fiber-optic to the rib. I agree it looks pretty cool.

I would def take the barrel off, easier to do the crown.

On a gun of any type and any caliber, shortening the barrel increases the blast and recoil. I agree with jehu.

I don't anticipate it to be too bad, if I do go through with it I will be getting the .44 mag model, and the forum I found that photo in said in total the barrel is 4.5". .44 mag out of a 4.5" barrel isn't anything too crazy. Heck they have an Alaskan model which is the same exact gun in the picture minus the 2" extended barrel.

I don't believe it will be too bad in a .44 magnum.

I have a John Gallagher custom 3.5" Redhawk .44mag that shoots like a dream.

And Gallagher will do the job for you, as well, I'm sure.

While it's no .22, the recoil is quite manageable.

Yup.

Although there is hope. I live in the Twin Cities in MN and the 'Metro' view is that guns are bad. However in my lifetime we've managed to get concealed carry and now we've got suppressors. All of them 'common sense' gun laws. (I love turning that phrase against the anti folk.)

Maybe Mass. will see the light too.

Please keep us informed as to what you eventually get.

P.S. Does the law allow you to buy an 'approved' gun and have it modified to the point where it would not be approved?

That thing is pretty sweet looking. If I don't end up with the cut down Super Redhawk I will almost certainly end up with a 4.2" Redhawk.

I'm hoping, there have been alot more gun owners in this state in the past few years. Just last year there was a new bill being proposed which would have made laws here even stricter, it actually worked against the anti-gunners and they got nothing that they asked for and the new bill passed actually worked in favor of gun owners, so I guess that's something.

Yeah absolutely, for example for a handgun to be sold in MA the trigger has to be X amount of lbs. Once you own it you can make that trigger as light as you want. Same goes for loaded chamber indicators or magazine disconnects, if you don't like them you can remove them.

Of course there are ways around getting guns that are not approved if you know LEO's who can transfer them to you or some shops choose to ignore the Attorney General's office and sell them anyways. For example the Attorney General said that new Glock's cant be sold in MA because they lack a loaded chamber indicator, but I legally own a Gen 4 Glock 17.

The point of most "Gun Laws" is to justifie government paychecks and to be a big pain as possible. Most gun laws serve no other purpose ...
