Shorten Ruger Security 6 barrel

My father in law has an older Ruger Security Six (blued) with the six inch barrel. He would like to keep the gun, but get a significantly shorter barrel -- like the approx. 3" barrel that was offered from the factory.

Can you still get an old barrel and have it reinstalled on this gun? How expensive would that be?

Can a competent smith cut down the barrel and reinstall the sights, etc.? Would that be cheaper or better?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If it shoots well now, chopping the barrel is probably going to be the best answer. You could have a gunsmith do a Tritium front sight at the same time .

Gun Parts Corp. of West Hurley, NY has Ruger parts. A 2-3/4 inch bbl goes for about $63. Add in the sights and pins for another $10. Hand it over to a smith, say he charges $60. Grand total about $133 not counting shipping.
