Shorten full choke barrel - what do I have?

I would like to shorten the barrel of a 30" Full choke shotgun. Remington 870 Wingmaster. If I chopped it down to 24" or so what kind of choke would I be left with? Any? How hard is it to reattach the bead sight?

I've shortened a few bbls, and mostly regretted same.

Special purpose bbls for the 870 series are neither expensive nor scarce.

The local gun shop in your area that handles police turnins probably has a few used riot bbls around. Last ones I saw here were in good shape and $75, IIRC.

And, if you take off a few inches from that bbl you have zero choke. Cylinder bore has its uses, but little versatility.

Chopping a barrel is a crap shoot. You may or may not get decent patterns. And you will never know till you test it cause each gun is different. Even guns of same make, model and consecutive serial numbers often shoot differently.

Listen to Dave, just get a proper short barrel and keep the long one for other appropiate duties.

I'll pile on the bandwagon. BTDT, got lucky, but learned better later.

THe choke is all in the last inch or so. Take it off and you have... taken it off. Zero choke.

'Lo Marakov ,

What you'll have is a "dove killer" deluxe . My FIL had exactly the gun you describe ; I didn't want to be next to him in a dove shoot.

That arrangement is excellent for shooting skeet also .

If you find that it doesn't 'suit' you after the operation , choke tubes can ,probably , be installed inexpensively . Hawkaaa53

Marakov, down on the FS forum, DML has some very good prices on riot bbls. If I needed a bbl right now, I'd be writing a check PDQ....
