Short barrel on my Mossberg

First post, thanks for having me.I bought a 12ga.pump from an individual strictly as a home defense weapon. My problem is that it had a 14" barrel knowing this to be illegal without going through proper channels I switched it out with a 28" barrel that came with the Mossberg security combo I purchased many years ago.My question .Is it illegal to own that 14" barrel even though it's not in use or does it need to be discarded.I have no intention of that gun leaving my home since I have other shotguns for hunting and recreational shooting but I would rather be safe than sorry but most of all legal.

Greetings ejptexed, and welcome aboard.

When it comes to sawed-off shotguns (or their barrels) I have just three alliterative words: Remember Ruby Ridge!

not a lawyer/not an expert

Given the above, I think that the bbl itself is not a prohibited device, just the firearm created when it is attached to the receiver to create the "short barreled shotgun".

But since it is an invitation to trouble and legal mixup, I would destroy the darn thing post haste. Conventional/legal 18" bbl's are easily obtained.
