shopping list

so i finally got the funds that i've been holding out for to make a few purchases i've been mulling over for a while. I just turned 21 in august, and at the moment have a High standard 1911, and a Taurus Judge w/ 6.5", and a few long guns. So i've been dying to grab a few handguns ever since i turned 21. so here is my list at the moment.

1. Concealed Carry Permit- top of the list obviously...$100 in MS, and it is non-negotiable
2. Kimber Ultra CDP- for concealed carry, obviously not cheap, but it has night sights, which are important imo, and the ambi safety, which is nice since i shoot lefty. I'm pretty sold on a good 1911 style for ccw. i looked at the crimson carry model, but the sights are awful, no ambi safety, no front strap checkering(which i also like, but its not vital)-1,300ish msrp, but sure i can find it for a more reasonable price at a local dealer i have used before who sells for a fair amount less than msrp
3. Ruger LCR- for pocket carry when i just dont feel i can pull off iwb carry, because as a beginner at concealed carry i just dont feel that owb is concealed enough. I like the model with the LG, because the sights are awful, but i believe the front can be changed, which might also be on my list-have found for right at $600 w/ the LG
4. SA XDm in .40- most likely to be kept in the drawer next to my bed.-best price i've seen is $550
5. obviously good holsters for the concealed carry guns

this is what i have it narrowed down to for right now. if anyone sees anything i'm missing please just say so...open to suggestions, especially on the 1911 side. I have looked online at colts and other brands in 3 and 4" models and they just dont seem to offer what the kimber does, and for really only a couple hundred less, so why settle when i can get what i want straight off? I havent ruled out a compact xd or glock for ccw, but i'm much more familiar with shooting 1911s. And i'm set on buying brand new, simply because everytime i buy ANYTHING used it craps out very quickly

The Kimber ultras are nice for carry IMO. I have a Ultra Crimson that I like (I've had the front strap checkered and different sights put on). So is the Dan Wesson CBOB. All are in the same price range. I could probably name others as well. The problem is going to be deciding which one you want. All I can recommend is going around to the gun shops and seeing as many as possible. See what feels good to you.
I agree with you that the 1911 platform makes a great carry handgun. Good luck in making your choice.

I've never carried so i dont know from experience, but i personally like the 1911 platform the best in general, and i just feel like i would be much more comfortable carrying something with a manual safety. and on kimber's compact frame with the 3" barrel it seems like it would be perfect....i would like to check out a compact model with the 4" barrel, but i havent been able to find one around here. because in all honesty....would 1" in the barrel make that much of a difference in printing?

recommendations for holsters are also appreciated, the supertuck seems like the obvious choice, but i'm open to other ideas for the 1911, and any and all suggestions for a pocket holster for the LCR. i might get a good shoulder holster for the xdm or a full size 1911 to carry under a jacket in very cold weather, or while riding my motorcycle in cool weather, but i would prefer not to change my mode of carry too often because consistency seems to be key. but in mississippi very cold weather doesnt come that often, so i'm often in a tshirt and jeans during the winter months. also summer time i lean more towards a tshirt and plaid or cargo shorts, if this helps narrow down some ideas

I've found that the printing is more often due to the grip rather than the barrel length. That's the reason for the bobtail like on the DW CBOB. That sharp corner doesn't stick out.

Yeah that's what I would think which is the benefit of the ultra or compact models with the smaller frame, but I've also heard of so many people carrying full size 1911s w/o the bobtail and not having any problems. I am not familiar with Dan wessons, not even the price ranges but I do know that the Kimber is about my limit right now, ha maybe further down the road I'll break out the big bucks and buy a Wilson combat or something but as of right now I can't justify dropping 3 or 4k on a gun

Glad you asked about a belt. My personal favorite is the horsehide 1.5" from
http://www.thebeltman.net/index.htm. You can count on a good belt to improve the performance and comfort of any holster and whatever heavy hunk of metal it carries.

Yep, I thought that was a serious chunk of change to invest, but now I'm thinking about another in black for more formal attire.

Don't go cheap on the belt, friend.

damn....$120 isnt cheap ha...but like you said it'll make carrying more comfortable, and effective i'm sure, that one will be a slightly later purchase though, i'm still not even sure what the wait time is on cc permits here, i still have to apply

so i also have been looking at the DW CBOB a lot lately...which with the bobbed frame should be ideal for concealed carry....at least thats what people claim. i've heard the stories about the 10mm though...shooting through 3 people and what not....wouldnt that be an issue in a self defense situation if there are innocent bystanders? gorgeous gun though and comes in at $1,000 according to what i've been reading on here, so its actually cheaper than the cdp.

so big question...is the 10mm in a carry gun overkill?

Well I finally went on the hunt and was able to find the ultra and compact cdp. And I liked the extra inch on the compact barrel and I liked the price tag better, the shop with the ultra wanted $1300 for it and I found my compact for right at 1100 after tax. Already cleaned it but haven't had a chance to shoot it. The breakdown is definitely different but once I get used to it it'll be easier than the conventional 1911 breakdown except I don't like needing a breakdown tool.

I found a shop with the compact, a xdm and a lcr...all of which I like, but when compared side by side I knew there was only one choice for today. The compact cdp fits my smallish hands perfectly. The xdm when compared was way too large(obviously can change the back strap) and the lcr just didn't feel quite right today either. I guess I was just feeling the kimber more today. The other two are still on my list to buy but they'll have to wait a bit. The lcr will probably be next once I get my permit.

I am going to apply for my cc permit when I come back home for the Christmas holidays in two weeks. And I also need to Start shopping for my new holster

jakeg823,

Unless you out grow your belt, you may use it for 40 years or more. So don't think merely about the purchase price, but think about the price per year. I have been using the same gun belt for over 30 years. If you plan on carrying a handgun in an inside the waistband (IWB) holster get your gun belt at least one inch larger than a regular belt.

On the 10mm auto, it is not overkill. All defensive handgun cartridges are under powered, including the 10mm auto in the hottest loads available (including the DoubleTap 200gr @1250fps). It is better than some, if you will practice enough to be competent with it. As with all handgun rounds, shot placement is paramount. I have been carrying the 10mm auto for the last 20 years or so. I used to carry a full size 1911, the Colt Delta Elite. I recently got a Dan Wesson CBOB in 10mm that I now carry.

i would love a cbob...and havent ruled it out....eventually. but DW is changing up their lineup for next year so i'm probably just gonna wait and see what the future brings for the company
