Shooting under water??? WHY???

What is the fasination w/ shooting underwater? I have seen several threads on a few forums re: how it can be done safely. I just keep wondering...WHY? So, I pose this question to this board. WHY???

Confusion is why. Glock outffits military contract pistols with marine spring cups. They have holes in them so that if water gets in the channel, it won't retard the firing pin spring, and helps debris drain from the channel. This is to promote drainage in wet environments (like SF/water ops), not to allow you to shoot underwater. Next thing you know, some yahoo on the internet starts this underwater shooting thing, and it becomes this big out-of-control urban myth.

most ANY gun will fire underwater... all you GOTTA do is to make ABSOLUTELY positive that the barrel is full of water... so you don't blow up the barrel...

The question isn't if it is possible, but why would you do it? It certainly can't be accurate, range is probably very short, risk to the shooter is probably high, so why even try it?

No self respecting Mall Ninja would put on his hi-speed, low drag ballistic nylon Speedo without a gun capable of firing underwater.

What if Al-Qaeda attacks us next by submarine? Do you really want to be unprepared for that scenario?

Saw a documentary last year during SharkWeek on Discovery. There was an abalone diver who carried a Glock 19 in a custom neoprene holster on his wetsuit for shark defense. This was off San Fran, where the sea lions haul out and the Great Whites feed. Not sure what a 9mm underwater will do even if you have the time to use it. That's one case I might go for the sharp stick.

Hell with that, Bear, go for the bang stick... Essentially a 20 or 12 gauge shotgun shell on a "punch" activated stick for shark protection.

Bang sticks are banned in Santa Barbara County (To protect sharks belive it or not.) Might be a California state law.

Why shoot underwater?

Because that damn baby seal pulled a knife on me,that's why!:p
It was him or me, I had no choice.

I think he was on drugs.;)

For general target disruption dynamite from a boat works best. But when you want just a big one or two a marine 870 or Mossberg works well when the bite is off.

I understand the Russians have some real neat underwater shooting devices:)
Hearing protection must be a real issue with sound conduction in H20:cool:

There is a underwater assault rifle made by APS and there is the old trusty HK P11 underwater pistol that shoots solid fueled darts lethal to 15m underwater and then has to be reloaded at the factory.

Why? Because you never know when you're going to be trying to escape a space station infested by aliens and have to shoot it out with them in a flooded compartment. You can't always count on Sigourney Weaver to be there to help you out of a jam.

Maybe an attempt to create another X-game. You know, skates, wave jumping, free-dive, falling from planes with skateboards on, bungee-jumping. Jeez...
