Shooting the Walther P22

I finally shot my Walther P22 over the weekend. This was the gun that I pick as the great find of the SHOT Show 2000. I have the longer barrelled version since that is all that is out there right now and it is a fun little gun to shoot. I only had problems with a couple of rounds in the first magazine. After that it was 100% reliable. I really like this pistol, feels good in my hand, and it is accurate for the plinker that I intended it to be. I would have preferred the shorter barrel for my use. The only bad thing that I can say about it is that in my report from January I commented that this gun would be an affordable plinker for the next generation of shooters that the Walther PP was to me. Unfortunately I also took my Walther PP .22 to the range to shoot it side by side with the new P22. As good as the P22 is give me the PP22 anyday. I will keep my P22, but it will not get taken to the plinking range nearly as much as the PP. I guess it really isn't fair to compare a $300 pistol with a $600 pistol, but the intended market seems to be the same. Not that anyone cares, but that's my opinion.

Thanks for the continuing reports Jeff. If you were not aware, Earls Repair now has the 3.42"bbls in stock. I'm waiting for the "first edition" before I buy mine.

Keep up the good work!

I understand that only 1000 of the First Editions are being sold in the US.

I have the 5" and will order a barrel from Earl, but the pistol is wonderful to shoot. I occasionally get a nosedive if the top round is not seated high in teh mag when loading, but other than that, a true joy to shoot.

Redhook, funny you should mention reports. I just renewed my domain www.shotshowreports.com today. I have been in contact with the admin who owns the server and he has graciously agreed to continue to provide this service FREE to the shooting community so we can all get the latest info from the SHOT Show as it happens. I have ordered badges and booked the plane reservations, so it looks like my son and I will again be doing the daily reports next Feb from Las Vegas.

Jeff, your day by day updates at last years show had most of us who couldn't attend on the edge of our seats. As for your website, it's nice to see some other contributing to the cause. I hadn't been on it since last year, but I just checked and it couldn't find the server. You might want to check out the link. You've also got mail.

Vluc, That last round issue is not uncommon with .22 autoloaders. Since it's only a 22, the weak recoil spring often has a hard time working it's way through a misloaded magazine when droping the slide on a fresh mag. Once the first round is in, inertia will ususally defeat any of the other rounds that misfeed. My Sig P220 mags do this sometimes, but the stronger recoil spring will strip the round without problems.

I too enjoyed the Shot show reports..look forward to them again this year.

I would go into a local gun shop and tell them something you mentioned in your report..they'd say...where did you here that?..I said it was at the Shot Show. They'd just go oohh and shut up...:D It was great. Thanks
