Shooting the P-11 at 100 yards

Sometimes you just have to try new things...

I was at the "informal range where no one ever picks up their trash," shooting a coupla rifles at 100 paces. Someone left a metal real estate sign, now pretty holey. I had the P-11 on me, so I thought I'd give it a try. Shooting seated position, elbows on knees.

Careful sight alingment...steady pull...Pow. Tink. Hmmmm.

Repeat, etc., etc.

I missed a couple in each mag, prolly poor trigger control on my part. But hit 8 out of 10.

Hitting a 2' X 3' target at 100 yards may not sound impressive, but it was a P-11 with a 3" sight radius, fer crying out loud. That pistol consistently impresses me with its accuracy (when I do my part).

And that's part of the reason we plink, right? To see what shots are possible at what distance.

I carried out more than I brought. Hope others do, too.

Next time I'll try a paper plate at 100 yards. That would be something.

I, for one, am impressed. I can do pretty well at a distance with my Cold Diamondback 38, but never even thought of trying it with my P11. Might just have to give it a shot.

Nice shooting. I like to do long range shooting with my handguns too. The Kelty at 100 yards is probably down to about 80 foot pounds of energy though, where a 9mm, available in the same size gun, still has around 280 fp.

HUH?!?

Taking long shots at junk, like that, is a lot of fun. I thank my lucky stars that I live in a place where I can still do it.

Nice Shooting.

Mannichler, I was shooting the 9mm Kel-Tec P-11, not the .32acp P-32.

I'm not crazy enough to shoot a P-32 at 100 yards.

Am I?

Recently as a range session was winding down we got to fooling around with our pistols at 100 yards. We were standing, no rest. I hit the target a couple of times in a mag with my hi power. A friend hit it some with his 1911. Best was done by another friend with a Glock 26! Hit 4 out of 10.

I remember reading online about a guy hitting a milk jug half the time @ 100 yrds with a hp, but I doubt that I'll ever get that good.

Guess contrary to what we believe, when we miss it's us, not the pistol

Let's not forget to hug a realtor, they produce some of the finest targets.....:D

Dave R,

That's outstanding trigger control if your P-11 still suffers from the factory overtravel, and that's excellent if you've added a trigger stop to take up the overtravel!

You can do it at 200 yards too! Just aim about 4' high and lower your aim a few inches at a time to calibrate your aim to your ammo. Knowing the height of the target helps to estimate how high to aim.

Then please get a range officer to witness a 6 shot <1" group at 25 yards, and post a photo of it for us. :D

The easiest way to learn to consistently make hard shots is to learn to make harder shots.

Excellent report! :)

Its the factory trigger, no shoe. My trigger is not bad. All I have done is lube all the contact points and dry fire a bunch. Its nice and smooth, though long.

1" group at 25 yards with the P-11? Don't think I can do that. That's 4MOA. Hitting a 2' X 3' real estate sign at 100 yards is 24+ MOA. That I can do. ;)

1"at 25 yards is a great goal...

And yes, I've got a P-32. I guess that's on the list of things to try.

We did the same thing with my Kel-Tec P-40 yesterday except the range was a meaured 50 yards and the target was a round log about a foot in diameter. My son and I put 15 out of 20 rounds into the stump before we ran out of ammo. That little pocket rocket is quite a handful in .40 caliber but if you do your part you can hit with it.

kdmoore hit it right on the head. For decades I have appreciated those real estate signs. Just this past weekend, local realtors provided target stands for four shooters. If you are lucky some are made of a plastic which is nearly self-sealing when hit. Although election season provides more target stands, they are inferior not only in construction and quality of materials, many lean left. On the other hand, some have pictures.

Shooting handguns at long range is so much fun. Its amazing how easy it can be if you practice at it a bit. I was at the range a few weeks ago shooting my stock Glock 20 10mm at my 8in steel spinner target at 100 yards. The flat shooting 10mm and the very accurate Glock 20 make it fairly simple. I have gotten to where I can hit it about 9 out of 10 from an offhand position. I didnt notice but a the folks in the next bay had stoped shooting and started watching...one of which was a local police officer who had just gotten off duty. While I was reloading he mentioned how amazine that was, and I told him that I wasnt a Bob Mundan type shot and that he could do it with some practice. He was still in uniform and carrying a Ruger GP-100 (yea...thats what I thought). I helped him take up a Bianchi Cup Baracade position on one of the posts for stability, and he managed to ding the plate on his 6th shot. I think just about everybody on the rifle range that day took a few shots at my spinner with a handgun. The cop saw my Kel-Tec P-32 in my pistol case and made a joke about trying that one. He ended up betting me that if I could hit the spinner once with it, I could have a few mags through the full-auto M-16 in his trunk. If I couldnt, I had to police all the brass from the days shooting. I had one box of .32 American Eagle and about half a box of Gold-Dots left. After going though all 65 rounds I had actualy managed to hit the plate twice (dumb luck ofcouce). The real supprising thing was how close the misses were. The general consisus of the onlookers is that atleast 80% of the shots I fired from the Kel-Tec would have hit a man standing where the spinner was. Gee that full-auto .223 was fun.

I'd be be pretty damn impressed with myself if I could do that on a regular basis. I like to shoot at a 2'x2' target at 50yrds.
Every now and again I do shoot a B-27 silouette mounted on a piece of drywall" sheet rock" at 100 yrds just for fun.
Those little puffs of white powder are really satisfying.
