shooting sticks

who here uses shooting stick(s) for handgun shooting?

how do you place the gun on the rest?

i have always put the barrel/frame on the rest.

i saw the new american hunter article on hand gun hunting and it shows the guy with his wrist in the rest of the stick.

ive never tried it like that, and wonder if it would work better?

which way do you prefer, and why?

Never used them and all I can think of is maybe he was protecting the gun from any possible damage from the sticks. When I shoot from a bench rest I let the rest support the gun.

I have used them for long range accuracy with my MKII 22lr and a S&W M19 357. I have wondered about the proper way myself. I rest the frame on the sticks. The barrel would be easier to place but I wonder if it affects the normal sighted-in accuracy. My sticks are padded and I don't worry about the finish.

I plan on hunting deer tiwth the S&W this fall and will use my Stoney Point cross-sticks if hunting on the ground.

Any artificial rest will change the POI from what you get shooting off hand. If you do want to sight in off a rest to see what the gun/load is capable of you should use a well padded rest and only rest the frame of the gun (in front of the trigger guard) on the rest and strive to keep the same amount of pressure on this point of contact uniform shot after shot (do not let the barrel contact the rest). If you are capable of resting your wrists on the rest and getting a very repeatable trigger release shot after shot, this is the best method. However, most shooters can't get the repeatability doing this. Hunting with a handgun and using sticks can be done but you end up carrying more gear and kind of defeating the purpose of what you set out to do. You might just as well use a rifle. If you want to hunt with a handgun there are few shortcuts (none that I know of) to success. It takes practice, practice, and more practice to master shooting the handgun. It's fifty percent form/repeatability and fifty percent physical conditioning.
