Shooting slugs in side by side coach gun

Is there a problem shooting rifled slugs in a stoeger coach gun 12 guage. The one I have ordered is the Supreme with the interchangeable chokes, it comes with imp. cyl. and mod.? I was thinking of the 2 3/4 inch winchester 1 ounce and would be for deer hunting within 50 yards.

Shouldn't be a problem to fire slugs. I doubt it is back/over bored. I would expect a mod or IMP MOD to be a good choice of chokes to start but would be fine all the way to full with old fashioned cheap soft lead "rifled chokes" like winchester super X silver box from walmart... and they happen to be the lowest price too;)

Yep, what Brent said. Also, if your shotgun isn't labeled "Do not use slugs in this barrel" on the barrel, your golden.

They should shoot just fine as far as safety goes. Personally, I've never seen a side-by-side that would put both slugs very near to each past 30 yards or so. Most times, from my experience, the first slug is fairly good but the other will shoot 12 inches or more from POA. Not that I've shot all that many side-by-sides with slugs but 2 or 3 and they've all been that way.

^ ^ ^ What he said about the point of impact i've heard many times regarding SXS's shooting slugs. While we are on the topic, i'd imagine over unders suffer from the same symptom?

It's true about the point of impact......usually.

That's one of the reasons double rifles cost so much, the dificulty of properly regulating them. With a shotgun so long as the patterns are within 6 to 10 inches of center on oneanother you're good. But they single slugs, of bullets, you need better.

Try it though as you may be lucky..............

Thanks for your input, I will check the owners manual when I get the shotgun. I have heard in the past that slugs could be harmful to side by sides but no one could tell me why. I have a 270 win. that I use normally when deer hunting but when my son comes home during deer season (sometimes, he is in the service) I let him use the rifle and thought I could use the shotgun for in close shots. My main purpose for the shotgun is home defense which I use light loads for.

O/U should not have the parallex problem associated with SxS, so both should shoot closer POA. SxS barrels are closer together at the muzzle. This compensates for the recoil offset caused by each barrell being offset from the centerline of the gunstock. That's why at a distance, there is a "cross-eyed" effect that spreads the POA of each barrel. I'm not sure, but I think the distance where both barrels bore-sight the same is 30 yds.
