Shooting Ranges in Richmond, VA area

I've just been asked to relocate to the Richmond, VA area from Illinois. I've done a couple searches for rifle ranges in the area, but haven't been able to locate anything. Any members here that can lend insight into this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

D&P Shooting Range off Midlothian...
Not a bad place.
Watch out for a certain guy named Joel there... He'll sell you stuff you dont need.
And at high prices.
:D

I'm looking at the new Richmond Yellow Pages. In addition to D & P in Richmond(Chesterfield County), there is a public indoor pistol range in Colonial Heights(south of here near Petersburg) - Straight Shooters Inc. at 127 Boulevard. JT

Cavliver is northwest of richmond. You can shoot at fort Lee in the summer. Blackcreek is private but do hold an IDPA match.

Thanks to all of you for the info. It's nice to get one of those important things resolved so you can move on to the small stuff, like finding a place to live, schools for the kids, etc... :) At least I know if I have a bad day at the office I can punch some targets to relax.

Thanks again.

My neck of the woods Snake, I can help a bit.

Amelia county has a free range for rifle and shotgun, have to shoot through those damn tubes for rifle but it is free. Fort Lee has some ranges open to the public but only on weekends. Black Creek Shooters club is out near the airport, members only but only $65/year. Cavalier Rifle and Pistol is less than an hour down the road but the wait for membership is a few years. Hannover Rifle and Pistol is a little closer but not quite as nice, still a bit of a wait. If you are into bullseye shooting the Richmond Police Department runs sancioned matches monthly. The D&P Shooting Range is kind of an older facility but is OK, prices on ammo are a bit higher than average but with insurance I guess it works that way. Straight Shooters is small but clean, has opened and closed more than once in the last year or two but I think they are back up again. Charles City Wing and Clay is not too far for sporting clays. Rivana Rifle and Pistol is in chesterfield but I haven't been there yet. Iassac Walton arround here somewhere but I haven't been there either. That is all that comes to mind right now, what type of shooting do you do and I can steer you in the right direction.

Snake,

Why would you want to leave our glorious State of Illinois with our FOIDs, numerous tollways, King Richard Daley, and Anti-gun Gov?

RUN AWAY FROM HERE AS FAST AS YOU CAN!
Who knows when we'll get rid of this Anti-gov and Daley. They keep bullying everybody into giving up their guns.

Glad to hear your moving to a more gun-friendly state. I wish you and your family luck in VA.

BTW - I used to live in Lindenhurst too.

George,

Not to question the administration (perish the thought), but isn't the Rivanna Rifle Range in Charlottesville? A small point, but an important one...Charlottesville is at least an hour away.

When are you moving back to Virginia? :D

Jake, Jason & Duck Hunt, thanks for the additional info. As far as the comments, I agree on the pros of the VA gun laws and am truely looking forward to them as opposed to what I have here. Being originally from South Dakota, guns were a part of life and I really hated having to show my FOID card here every time I needed to buy ammo. Most the time people looked at you like you were going to use it right then and there!

I will begin working in VA 3/6 and my family will join me either when the house sells or school is out, whichever comes first. As far as what I like to shoot, I would love to be able to shoot my pistols more.

I'd be more than willing to swap stories and buy all of you a drink if our paths ever cross in the Richmond area. I'll be the guy with a smile on his face and the Colt revolvers at the range :)

Charlottesville!
Yes - thats the place... My Bad...
Have been out of VA for a long time now.
Whatever the town name - its that place about an hour west of Richmond. Take, what is it 5th Street exit south? I think so... its a few minutes down that road - 5 I think... on the right and through a gate...
No shooting sunday morning - they dont want to disturb the church thats near by. But I dont consider that an infringement on my 2nd amendments... I try not to wake up on sunday mornings anyways. :D

I live in Richmond, and have worked for the place that used to be the Firing Line, now known as D & P, until I contracted lead contamination frm working on the range...terrible enviromental controls there. I have also worked and managed Southern Gun World, and from '92 to '99 I worked at De Goff's in Mechanicsville. If you have the money, one of the best places to shoot is Isaac Walton's in Charles City Co. I think the first year, with initiation fee, is around $400.00. But it is a beautiful range. Black Creek is fairly open, but not too friendly to handgun shooters..If you are under 40 and don't shoot .22LR bench rest, they want to have very little to do with you. Cavalier Rifle and Pistol is very nice. I think they have a 400 yd range there, plus they shhot IDPA out there on the last Saturday of the week. It might be Sunday, it's been about a year since I shot out there. The down side to Cavalier is that you basically have to wait until one of the members dies to get in, waiting list is about 2 years. You can attend and compete in all matches however without needing to be a member. Talk to Donny at DeGoff's about IDPA and tell him Tim sent you.

Oh yeah....Joel @ D & P is a great guy too. all the sales men know each other around here, and I was his manger at Southern when we were both there, until all the good people left that hell hole.

Good luck.
