Shooting Cam

I have a friend who has a couple of 50 bmg rifles and he shoots up to 1/2 mile. He wants me to come up with a camera system (out in the middle of nowhere) that he can use to view his target hits from 1/2 mile a way. Has anyone done something like this or know how to do it?

A camera that can see at that range is probably available but would be expensive. Also the mount would have to be very stable.

A better alternative may be to run Ethernet and mount a camera close to the target, a cheap webcam might get the job done for you. Fiber could reach the entire distance but the cost goes up. Wire Ethernet is rated for 100 meters max, probably could go a little farthur but I have never tested that. Set a switch at every 100 meter interval. You would also have to run power for the switches and camera with the Ethernet cable. Another thought you could have batteries at each switch and camera. In the industries I am in we use 24 VDC powered switches all the time, the power they consume is minimal so no problem with voltage drop even at 1/2 mile with 18 gage wire.

Wireless Ethernet would also be an option and probably the cleanest.

All of this can be had from Ebay or other for a lot less than paying full retail prices.

A lot of ways to get there.

Good luck!

This will only transmit the signal 100yds at a time, but you could daisy-chain them by running the output of the receive units to the input of another transmit unit, until you got from the target camera back to a monitor on the firing bench.

Kinda pricey though.

Webcam and wireless internet as jtmckinney suggested is a good idea, though I don't know if wireless internet would reach that far it would be a less costly investment to find out. And if it didn't work, you could just take the parts back to the store.

battery powered RS 232 using a twisted pair (old technology) but can go a mile easy. You could use coax instead of a twisted pair, but the twisted pair would be the least exensive.

I think the simplest solution would be for your friend to invest in some steel gongs. Than way he doesn't need to see the holes in the target, he can just look (of have a spotter look) through the scope/spotting scope and look for the swinging, and listen for the "dooonnnnggggg".

Wireless Ethernet I mentioned in my earlier post was like what is found from N-Tron < http://www.n-tron.com/products_detail.php?product=54&series=5 >.

Again these can be expensive but they work very well and are not hard to set up. There are other manufacturers but my experience has been with N-Tron and Phoenix Contact. These could also be portable and taken down when not in use.

I would hope someone shooting a 50 BMG would know what they are doing and not shoot their radio or camera:D.

Have a great day!
James
